This position functions as a Transportation Worker II in the North Wake County Maintenance Unit located in Bunn, NC. The role reports to the Franklin County Maintenance office but performs work in Wake County. The job involves a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside features. Responsibilities include installation of traffic and erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work, and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response duties include traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, hurricane cleanup, and other emergencies as they occur. The position requires the operation of various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, forklift, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, roller, and additional heavy equipment as needed. The employee will perform flagging operations to safely guide traffic through work zones and perform manual labor for extended periods. This role requires work during adverse weather conditions and emergency response, which may lead to extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays, and is subject to emergency call-back. The position is subject to outside extreme environmental conditions and hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic. Safety toe shoes are required. The job involves manual labor such as operating chain saws, shoveling, driving trucks, and litter pickup. Employees at this level may train on and operate equipment associated with the specialist level for a small percentage of time. Work may include lifting up to 50lbs repeatedly. The employee must be able to climb, bend, transverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. A valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement is required. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug testing is required, and the offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion of a post-offer employment evaluation.
