About The Position

This position is located in the Stanly County Roadside Environmental Unit. This is an Intermediate Level Roadside Environmental position that consists of a wide range of job responsibilities. Primary responsibilities will be with herbicide operations within division, including the spraying of all guardrails & capped islands within the division, wildflower beds and plant beds. Other responsibilities may include seeding, plowing, cult packing, fertilizing, liming, mulching, tilling, dyna-driving, spraying pre and post emergent herbicides, mowing, and pulling of weeds. Responsibilities in assisting in maintaining landscaped plant beds across division, including planting, mowing, spraying, and pulling weeds, mowing grass and maintaining yards at all NCDOT facilities. Position participates in the daily Operational Risk Management program including participation in daily tailgate safety meetings and performing Pre-Trip inspections on equipment each morning before leaving the work site. Position is responsible for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE's) dependent upon the nature of the work performed. Follows all applicable standard operating procedures (SOP's). The selected candidate must have working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which they are assigned the ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by Supervisor. The position requires the ability to lift 50 lbs. and the ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing duties. The selected candidate must have the ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. Ability to work in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. May require working during non-traditional hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and times of emergency. Snow and ice operations may be required. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Safety toe footwear is required.

Requirements

  • A valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement required.
  • The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.
  • Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
  • As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
  • Prospective drivers must meet the following standards to be eligible to operate NCDOT vehicles: No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years
  • No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years
  • Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (Note: Employees permanently residing in adjacent states may operate a DOT vehicle using a current, valid, appropriate driver's license from their state of residence.)
  • If a driver applicant has possessed an out-of-state driver’s license in the past ten years, the driver’s record from the state(s) involved shall be obtained.
  • Such applicants and those who currently possess an out-of-state driver’s license will be responsible for providing their driving records from the appropriate states
  • Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and post offer employment evaluation.
  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of vegetation management including but not limited to shrubs, trees, fertilizer, etc. using sound horticultural practices
  • Experience in applying herbicides to control weeds and brush
  • Experience in operation of pesticide applicator truck, tractors, and utility vehicles
  • Demonstrated ability to calibrate computerized Spray Truck
  • Experience in correctly applying herbicides and pesticides in accordance with the label, as well as proper storage and disposal techniques
  • Applicants with at least three years of related experience are highly encouraged to apply.
