About The Position

This position is classified-exempt and "at will" and will be assigned to the Central Sign Shop at the Dry Branch Location. The employee will assist in various tasks related to sign production, including handling metal sign blanks, stocking finished signs, pulling blanks for production, and cutting them. Responsibilities also include operating a corner punch machine, a hole punching machine, and preparing blanks for sheeting applications. The role involves applying reflective sheeting, preparing and cleaning ink screens, operating ink screening equipment, and using a flatbed plotter for cutting vinyl and acrylic sign materials. Additional duties include inventory verification, minor maintenance on shop equipment, light shop upkeep, operating forklifts, man-lifts, and electrical pallet movers, and delivering materials to district sign shops. A CDL license must be obtained within six months of employment. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program depends on hours completed, proficiency, training, and obtaining a CDL. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice. In the area of assignment of Traffic Control, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment. The hourly rate is $17.5313.

Requirements

  • No formal education required.
  • Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in roadway maintenance, traffic control, equipment operation or maintenance, or the fabrication of aluminum / other metal parts / other fabricated materials, comparable to the work performed by the Division of Highways.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades.
  • Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.
  • Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to climb high steel structures.
  • Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
  • Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders).
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

  • Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.

Responsibilities

  • Cut old signposts with a chop saw or remove with hand tools.
  • Utilize a torch to install pavement markings on roadway.
  • Set up traffic control signs and flag motorists at work zones.
  • Set up lane closures, road closures, and detours at work zones.
  • Manufacture signs utilizing the Central Sign Shop machinery.
  • Distribute signs or sign accessories from Central Sign Shop to District Sign Shop.
