About The Position

This position is classified-exempt and "at will." The Transportation Worker 1 Laborer will be assigned to the Central Sign Shop. Under close supervision, the employee will assist with entry-level work in various tasks related to sign production within the Central Sign Shop. The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.

Requirements

  • No formal education required.
  • No prior experience is required.
  • Knowledge of general safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is not required for the Laborer assignment.

Nice To Haves

  • A CDL license must be obtained within six months of employment.
  • Progress through the apprenticeship program, as well as the opportunity for advancement to a higher classification, is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Advancement through the apprenticeship program is limited without a CDL or other required certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Handling metal sign blanks and stocking finished signs for inventory.
  • Pulling blanks for production and cutting them using shears.
  • Using a corner punch machine to corner metal sign blanks.
  • Using a hole punching machine for punching.
  • Preparing the blanks for sheeting applications.
  • Applying reflective sheeting to the blanks.
  • Preparing and cleaning ink screens for printing.
  • Operating ink screening equipment to print signs.
  • Using a flatbed plotter to cut vinyl and acrylic sign materials.
  • Assisting with inventory verification.
  • Performing minor maintenance on shop equipment.
  • Carrying out light shop upkeep.
  • Operating forklifts, man-lifts, and electrical pallet movers.
  • Delivering materials to district sign shops.
  • Receiving deliveries.
  • Assist higher level Transportation Workers in the maintenance of roads and facilities.
  • Wash equipment brought in for repair.
  • Flag traffic at construction sites.
  • Clean buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Control brush and vegetation using hand tools.
  • Remove debris and litter from culverts and highways.
