About The Position

Under general supervision, this classified-exempt and "at will" position is responsible for fabricating and installing traffic control signs and supports. The role involves installing and removing signposts, and erecting traffic control signs and barricades for construction and maintenance projects. Responsibilities include operating various equipment for sign installation such as a hydraulic post driver, chop saw, torch, and hand tools. The position also entails helping to install new or repaired electronic traffic signal systems, setting up lane closures, road closures, and detour signage, and flagging motorists through work zones. Depending on the specific assignment, duties may include operating motorized highway maintenance equipment like a skid steer, end loader, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, man lifts, hydra platform, and tandem-axle truck. The role may involve exposure to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program, with progression dependent on hours completed, proficiency, training, and obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment for the Traffic Control assignment. The hourly rate is $18.3938.

Requirements

Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in roadway maintenance, traffic control, equipment operation or maintenance, or the fabrication of aluminum / other metal parts / other fabricated materials, comparable to the work performed by the Division of Highways.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.
Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment.
Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
Ability to climb high steel structures.
Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders).
Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
Valid driver's license required.
Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment in the area of assignment of Traffic Control.

Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.

Erecting signposts and new signs along roadway.
Cutting old signposts with a chop saw or removing with hand tools.
Utilizing a torch to install pavement markings on roadway.
Setting up traffic control signs and flagging motorists at work zones.
Setting up lane closures, road closures, and detours at work zones.
