About The Position

This entry-level position involves the construction and maintenance of highways. The role requires operating various equipment, driving light trucks, and performing tasks related to snow removal and ice control. Selected applicants will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program and must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of employment. Advancement opportunities are dependent on performance, training, and obtaining/maintaining a CDL. The West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) is responsible for over 35,000 miles of state roads, and this role may require irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and overtime, sometimes with short notice.

Requirements

  • Must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of employment.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).
  • Knowledge of general safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor-driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor-driven equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a light truck or vehicle during regular operations, snow removal, and ice control.
  • Operate various equipment including fork truck, end loader, skid steer, rollers, utility tractor, and brush chipper.
  • Answer telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control.
  • Transport materials or fuel to equipment.
  • Provide traffic control by flagging on job sites.
  • Perform minor maintenance on equipment and vehicles.
  • Control brush and vegetation using hand tools and other equipment.
  • Plow snow using a light truck.
