This entry-level position, under general supervision, performs functions related to the construction and maintenance of highways. The role involves driving light trucks and operating various equipment such as forklifts, end loaders, skid steers, rollers, utility tractors, and brush chippers. Responsibilities also include traffic control, transporting materials, and potentially answering telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control (SRIC). Selected applicants will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program and must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of employment. Advancement opportunities are dependent on program progress, proficiency, training, and maintaining a CDL. The WVDOT is responsible for over 35,000 miles of state roads, which may require employees to work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and overtime, sometimes without prior notice.
