About The Position

The City of Lafayette is seeking a Transportation Technician to perform a variety of skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, and construction of City transportation and traffic facilities. This includes signs and roadway markings, traffic operations and control devices, stormwater management facilities, water distribution and wastewater collection facilities, landscaping and natural areas, and related infrastructure and equipment. The role involves executing duties based on established plans and responding to changing priorities and emergencies, operating light to heavy equipment and specialty tools. The position can be filled at multiple levels: Transportation Trainee (entry-level, requires CDL training), Transportation Tech I (entry-level, requires CDL or ability to obtain), Transportation Tech II (intermediate level, requires CDL), and Operator (skilled/experienced, requires CDL).

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL license within 6 or 12 months of hire (depending on level) with a safe driving record.
  • Operators must possess a current CDL license.
  • Must have Flagger certification or the ability to obtain within 6 or 12 months of hire (depending on level).
  • Trainee: Little to basic experience with maintenance, equipment operation, construction, plumbing, or a related field desired.
  • Technician I: One year experience required. Previous outside experience will count toward criteria to advance to higher levels.
  • Technician II: Two years’ experience required. Previous outside experience will count toward criteria to advance to higher levels.
  • Operator: Three years’ experience required. Previous outside experience will count toward criteria to advance to higher levels.
  • Demonstrates ability to positively and appropriately interact with customers and community members.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with supervisors, management and other employees.
  • Acceptable record of Safety and Job Performance.
  • Proficiency with computer use and applications such as GIS for data entry and retrieval or creation of regulatory and other signage.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle throughout the work period, including off-road and during adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to ascend and descend from 30-foot ladder through 24” openings.
  • Ability to occasionally remove and replace up to 120 lb. manhole covers and pick up 90 lb. bags of concrete and carry them for up to 20 ft.
  • Ability to travel over rough terrain.
  • Ability to work in the street in heavy traffic.
  • Subject to random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident alcohol and substance abuse testing.

  • Operators can train others in the use of equipment, machinery and computers and GIS required for the role.

Responsibilities

  • Perform transportation maintenance activities such as asphalt patching, pothole repair, street sweeping, trash/debris/tree limb removal, and right-of-way structure repair, alley grading and maintenance.
  • Perform traffic operations maintenance, including installing traffic signs and roadway markings, conducting traffic studies, and installing/maintaining electronic traffic control devices.
  • Perform stormwater infrastructure maintenance, including cleaning ditches, drainage ways, inlets, and trash racks, and vegetation removal.
  • Engage in snow and ice mitigation by driving trucks with plows and spreaders to clear streets and apply materials.
  • Perform utility locates and report discrepancies in GIS.
  • Maintain records related to inspections, preventative schedules, maintenance, and work activities.
  • Perform graffiti removal.
  • Provide miscellaneous assistance with City events and programs.
  • Perform or assist skilled workers in light and heavy construction tasks, potentially in trenches or confined spaces.
  • Work irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, and emergencies as required for storm events, facility damage, main breaks, and other Public Works emergencies.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for Public Works emergencies.
  • Fabricate and assemble signage or roadway markings (Operator level).
  • Assist Engineering and Enforcement in analysis of conditions and crash reports (Operator level).
  • Assist in or perform grade analysis of channels, and dig, reform, or excavate storm channels as designed (Operator level).
  • Perform routine maintenance on snow and ice mitigation equipment.
  • Operate and maintain specialty tools and train others on their safe and effective use (Operator level).
