About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a Transportation Technician 3 to serve as a Design Technician in the Olympia Project Engineer Office. This role supports the development of highway transportation design projects by performing technical design and construction support activities. The goal is to deliver transportation projects safely, efficiently, and in compliance with WSDOT standards, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and with a strong commitment to quality, safety, and stewardship. This position also contributes to a collaborative and inclusive workplace focused on improving Washington's transportation system.

Requirements

  • Basic technical skills and/or knowledge of science, mathematical, construction, or engineering principles in support of transportation projects (for TT1 level). This includes tasks such as the ability to perform basic math, follow written and verbal instructions, use basic field and laboratory equipment, record test results and observations accurately, and execute data entry and documentation using a computer.
  • Technical skills and/or knowledge of engineering principles in support of transportation projects (for TT2 level). This includes tasks such as surveying, drafting, structural detailing, engineering design, and maintaining project records to ensure compliance with applicable standards and specifications. Foundational knowledge may be supported by formal classroom training.
  • Demonstrated skills in independently applying technical engineering principles in support of transportation projects (for TT3 level). This includes tasks such as surveying, drafting, structural detailing, engineering design, and maintaining project records to ensure compliance with applicable standards and specifications. Demonstrated knowledge may be supported by formal classroom training and/ or credentials such as Engineering-in-Training (EIT) certification or a Land Surveyor’s License.
  • Advanced skills in operating Windows-based computer systems and software, including MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, SharePoint, and Outlook).
  • Skills to communicate technical information effectively and professionally to a diverse audience, including those with non-technical backgrounds, virtually, telephonically, and in-person.
  • Skills to work productively in a team environment under tight deadlines and shifting priorities, producing accurate and consistent results.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparing design documentation, contract plans, specifications, cost estimates (PS&Es), and supporting project reports in accordance with current design policies, standards, and guidelines.
  • Develop and update plan sheets, exhibits, and project documentation for roadway alignments, intersections, drainage, hydraulics, right of way, geometrics, and roadway sections.
  • Review engineering calculations, contract plans, specifications, and computerized records to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with engineering and drafting standards.
  • Document project activities, track daily work, and maintain accurate project records using computerized systems.
  • Create and maintain engineering drawings, right of way sheets, presentation graphics, base maps, and PS&E documents using computer-aided drafting (CAD) software.
  • Prepare quantity calculations, contract estimates, and engineering documentation using specialized software to support transportation design projects.
  • Conduct periodic field reviews, gather site data, and verify existing conditions to support quality control and project design.
  • Promote a safe work environment by following established safety policies while providing general office and field support as needed.
