About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic 3 to provide journey-level maintenance and repair services for seven Safety Rest Area sites and buildings within the Eastern Region Area 3. This position performs preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on mechanical and plumbing equipment, building structures, and water and sewer systems to keep facilities safe and operational. This Maintenance Mechanic also supports the maintenance and repair of seven maintenance sheds and associated support buildings and sites in coordination with Eastern Region Facilities. Through effective communication and coordination with internal and external partners, this position helps ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of WSDOT facilities. This position performs work that is often physical in nature, primarily outdoors, and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time. Maintenance Mechanics may work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water. Work may also include traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain in varying weather conditions.

Requirements

Skilled Trades / Maintenance: Demonstrated journey-level knowledge and ability to perform building, plumbing, water system, and equipment maintenance and repair using appropriate tools, materials, methods, safety practices, and applicable codes and standards.
Plumbing and Water Systems: Demonstrated ability to install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and replace commercial plumbing systems, fixtures, water supply and waste systems, pumps, motors, and related components.
Preventive Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Demonstrated ability to diagnose equipment and system problems, identify appropriate corrective actions, perform preventive maintenance, and return equipment and facilities to safe and reliable operating condition.
Safety and Risk Management: Demonstrated ability to recognize and mitigate hazards associated with traffic, elevated work, confined spaces, chemicals, hazardous materials, biological hazards, power tools, and heavy equipment, and adverse weather conditions while following applicable safety requirements.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Demonstrated ability to safely operate and perform routine maintenance on highway maintenance equipment, vehicles, power tools, hand tools, and specialized equipment used in maintenance operations.
Communication and Documentation: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, follow written and verbal instructions, document maintenance activities, complete required records, and communicate technical information to others.

Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL), endorsement N (Air Brake restriction removed).
Valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
Washington State Department of Health Backflow Tester certificate or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
WSDA Pesticide Operator License or ability to obtain within the first six (6) months of hire.
Valid Traffic Control/Flagging card or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
First Aid Certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
Ability to respond to emergency call outs, work other scheduled shifts, and/or extended shifts on short notice (days, nights, and weekends), and perform standby duty.
Ability to work and stay out of town overnight as duties require and be available for callout on weekends and evenings.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and often next to live traffic, at times at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water.
Ability to work in a confined environment; negotiate rough, steep terrain; and work low to the ground or at ground level.

Nice To Haves

Roadway Maintenance: Proficient knowledge and experience performing roadway maintenance, bridge maintenance/construction, and/or heavy equipment operation.

Well and Water System Maintenance: Journey-level plumbing-documented experience with installing and maintaining commercial plumbing fixtures, water delivery components, water metering and protection devices, water conditioning systems and similar equipment.
Carpentry and Building Maintenance: Demonstrated journey-level experience performing building maintenance and repairs, including doors, windows, hardware, framing, drywall, flooring, concrete, tile, and related building components.

Responsibilities

Perform journey-level plumbing work for the Eastern Region rest area operations.
Read blueprints, estimate time, materials, equipment, and submit formal test results as required by local code enforcement for these projects.
Install, repair, trouble shoot and perform preventative maintenance on plumbing (supply and waste).
Perform backflow testing, repairs and replacements, landscape maintenance, landscape irrigation maintenance, vegetation control and lawn mowing.
Provide building maintenance, including painting, replacing drywall, and repairing flooring, framing, tile, and doors.
Perform diagnostics, maintenance, replacement, and preventive maintenance of water supply and well systems.
Clean and perform other custodial duties, which may include handling of hazardous substances, hazardous objects, and possible bloodborne pathogens.
Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment and hand tools, including sharpening power saws and chains, cleaning around the shed, washing vehicles, and greasing tools and equipment.
Perform snow and ice control, including snow plowing and application of anti-icing compounds and abrasives to road surface with truck mounted equipment.
