About The Position

Woolpert is seeking an entry-level Transportation Structures Engineer (EIT I) to join our dynamic Transportation Design team in our Harrisburg, PA office. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to a wide variety of transportation infrastructure projects across multiple states and clients, with a primary focus on transportation structures such as bridges, culverts, sign structures, and retaining walls in Pennsylvania. Our team is composed of experienced professionals who are passionate about mentoring early-career engineers, providing hands-on training, and developing the technical and professional skills needed for long-term success. This role offers exposure to diverse engineering practices and project types, helping you build a strong foundation in structural design while exploring adjacent disciplines such as roadway, geotechnical, aviation, and private development. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Structural emphasis preferred) from an ABET/EAC-accredited program.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification required or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Internship or 0–2 years of experience in transportation structures or structural design preferred.
  • Familiarity with PennDOT DM-4 and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications is a plus.
  • Experience with MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer (ORD), Open Bridge or Civil 3D is beneficial but not required.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work collaboratively across teams.
  • Eagerness to learn, grow, and develop technical expertise in transportation structures engineering.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with PennDOT DM-4 and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications is a plus.
  • Experience with MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer (ORD), Open Bridge or Civil 3D is beneficial but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Work under the guidance of Licensed Professional Engineers on transportation structures projects.
  • Assist in the analysis and design of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and related structural components.
  • Support preparation of plans, specifications, and engineering calculations in accordance with AASHTO and state DOT standards.
  • Utilize engineering software (e.g., MicroStation, OpenRoads, or structural analysis tools) to support design and drafting tasks.
  • Aid in the development of 3D models and structural layouts for transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Assist with quantity take-offs, cost estimating, and construction documentation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on transportation projects including roadway, geotechnical, and hydrological analysis.
  • Provide general project support across multiple assignments as needed.
