About The Position

Performs the essential task of school bus routing and provides administrative support for the Transportation Department. This role is illustrative of the tasks and responsibilities and is not meant to be all-inclusive. The description does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change by Springfield Public Schools as the needs and requirements of the job change. The position involves determining transportation eligibility for students, answering telephones, responding to questions from parents and school staff, and performing related duties. It also requires adherence to rules, regulations, and guidelines set forth by the Springfield School Committee. Key responsibilities include creating and maintaining school bus routes, assisting the Transportation Director with sequencing routes, contributing to decisions made by the Director, and maintaining accurate student records in Versatrans and Power School. The role requires collaboration with SPS staff, transportation vendors, and Parent and Community Engagement Center staff to determine transportation eligibility for McKinney-Vento/Foster Care students. Providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers is essential. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Education or related field.
  • Minimum 2-3 years experience, including experience in office setting and working with children.
  • Knowledge of the city streets, intersections and traffic patterns
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Must possess exceptional organizational skills
  • Ability to create and use transportation reports from Versatrans.
  • Ability to make decisions based on policy and procedure governing school transportation.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations governing traffic
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Versatrans Routing Program.
  • Ability to prioritize and assign work
  • Knowledge of training, orienting, and managing personnel
  • Ability to develop and write reports, policies, and correspondence
  • Ability to handle common inquiries or complaints
  • Ability to respond to questions from students, faculty, staff, and visitors
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to use (or learn to use) computer software and systems applicable to the position

Responsibilities

  • Determine transportation eligibility for students.
  • Answers telephones; and responds to questions from parents and school staff.
  • Create and maintain school bus routes for all district schools.
  • Assist the Transportation Director with the essential tasks of sequencing all bus routes.
  • Contribute to the decisions made by the Transportation Director.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and correct student records in Versatrans and Power School.
  • Work in conjunction with all SPS staff in management of school bus routes.
  • Work in conjunction with all SPS school transportation vendors.
  • Work in conjunction with the Parent and Community Engagement Center staff to determine transportation eligibility for McKinney-Vento/Foster Care students.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
