About The Position

This position functions as a first-line professional manager of a complex work area and is responsible for directing the activities of staff within the Statewide Planning Section West Unit and providing leadership ensuring that Unit responsibilities are carried out with a focus on quality, efficiency, and timeliness. This position supervises the development of the Metropolitan Area Transportation Improvement Programs (TIPs), Unified Work Programs (UWP), and Metropolitan Long Range Transportation Plans (LRTPs). Oversees the multi-modal transportation planning process in Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) and Transportation Management Areas (TMAs) to assure compliance with applicable state and federal requirements. Oversees the coordination and management of the Region Planning Agencies, Rural Task Force Program, Small Urban Program, and the Michigan Byways Program. Oversees the development of the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) and the STIP amendment process. The STIP establishes a four-year program of all projects, both state and local, that will use federal transportation funds within the four- year timeframe. This position is also responsible for the process, products and deadlines associated with the core functions of the unit.

Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major with at least 30 semester (45 term) credits in one or a combination of the following: planning (city, community, environmental, regional, and/or urban), environmental studies and/or sustainability, engineering, statistics, mathematics, geography, geographic/geospatial information systems, logistics and/or supply chain management, or economics.
  • Five years of professional experience in the field of transportation planning equivalent to a Transportation Planner or Transportation Engineer, including three years equivalent to a Transportation Planner P11 or Transportation Engineer P11, two years equivalent to a Transportation Planner 12 or Transportation Engineer 12, or one year equivalent to a Transportation Planning Specialist 13 or Transportation Engineering Specialist 13.
  • Attach a copy of your official college transcripts and/or foreign degree evaluation with your application.
  • Applicants who possess foreign degrees must have their academic credentials evaluated or converted into U.S. educational equivalents.
  • Submit and pass a pre-employment drug test and physical (if applicable) prior to their actual appointment.
  • Criminal and driving records will also be checked if applicable.
  • Results of the drug test, physical, criminal background, and driving records must indicate eligibility for employment.
