About The Position

This position performs maintenance of state trunklines within the right-of-way for Region Maintenance Crews in the seven county area in Southwest Region. This position may be trained to operate any piece of equipment or operation done in a typical maintenance garage. The major operations or equipment used is listed in the following duties. This position is required to participate in work element system and travel with crews in assigned geographic areas of the garage. This position is required to work region wide while on temporary winter assignment to a maintenance garage. This position is a split assignment between the Region Maintenance Crew facility and a maintenance garage. Winter months are spent performing winter, surface, roadside, general maintenance duties at a maintenance garage and the summer months are spent at Region Maintenance Crews. This position operates a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more when performing maintenance activities. The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (6) level through the maximum rate at the experienced (E8) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.

Requirements

  • Education typically acquired through completion of high school.
  • Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 (Recruit): Possession of a Commercial Learner’s Permit upon appointment to the position. Continuing employment requires possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months of the date of hire into the position and must maintain throughout employment in the position.
  • Transportation Maintenance Worker 6, 7, E8: Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required at the time of appointment to the position. If the selected applicant has a CDL Group A or B with or without the N or X endorsement, they will be required to obtain a CDL Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months from the date of hire into the position and must maintain throughout employment in the position.
  • Transportation Maintenance Worker E8: The MDOT Statewide Work Element Coordinator must approve satisfactory completion of the MDOT TMW Work Element training and certification program.
  • Must pass a pre-employment/pre-appointment drug test and physical (if applicable).
  • Criminal and driving records will be checked.
  • Prohibition of using artificial intelligence (AI) software in all areas of the selection process.

Nice To Haves

  • Transportation Maintenance Worker 6: No specific type or amount of experience is required.
  • Transportation Maintenance Worker 7: One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.
  • Transportation Maintenance Worker E8: Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level.
