About The Position

The Transportation Maintenance Director is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, inspection, and safe operation of all district vehicles and transportation equipment. This position ensures the district's bus fleet meets all state and federal safety requirements while minimizing downtime through an effective preventative maintenance program. The Transportation Maintenance Director will work closely with district administration and transportation staff to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable transportation services for students. This position may also assist with driver training, CDL preparation, and transportation operations as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Arkansas driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL with Passenger and School Bus endorsements within a timeframe established by the district.
  • Ability to obtain Arkansas School Bus Inspector Certification if required by the district.
  • Ability to pass all required background checks and drug screenings.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a diesel mechanic, fleet mechanic, heavy equipment mechanic, school bus mechanic, or related field.
  • Experience working on school buses, commercial vehicles, or heavy-duty trucks preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of diesel and gasoline engine maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of air brake systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, hydraulic systems, and preventative maintenance programs.
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger and School Bus endorsements preferred.
  • Arkansas School Bus Inspector Certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
  • Experience training or mentoring CDL drivers preferred.
  • Experience using computerized diagnostic equipment and fleet maintenance software.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical issues independently.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of all district buses, vehicles, and transportation equipment.
  • Develop and implement a preventative maintenance schedule for the district transportation fleet.
  • Perform diagnostics, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repairs on diesel and gasoline-powered engines, transmissions, electrical systems, air brake systems, hydraulic systems, and other vehicle components.
  • Ensure all district buses and vehicles meet Arkansas Department of Education, Arkansas State Police, and Department of Transportation safety requirements.
  • Coordinate and schedule required inspections, maintenance, and safety checks.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, inspections, maintenance schedules, and vehicle service history.
  • Monitor fleet conditions and make recommendations regarding repairs, replacement schedules, and future transportation needs.
  • Manage inventory of parts, tools, supplies, and equipment necessary for transportation maintenance.
  • Obtain quotes and assist with purchasing recommendations related to transportation equipment and repairs.
  • Respond to vehicle breakdowns and transportation emergencies as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe transportation shop and work environment.
  • Assist with transportation routing, scheduling, and operational needs when necessary.
  • Serve as a resource for bus drivers regarding vehicle operation, inspections, and maintenance concerns.
  • Assist in training prospective bus drivers on pre-trip inspections, vehicle operation, and CDL requirements.
  • Help coordinate and prepare employees seeking a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), including training related to school bus endorsements and state qualification requirements.
  • Assist the district in maintaining compliance with all state and federal transportation regulations.
  • Drive a bus route, activity trip, or other district vehicle in emergency situations or when staffing shortages occur.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
