About The Position

The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is seeking experienced agency employees for the position of Transportation Maintainer 4 (Highly Skilled Tree Climber) in Vernon. This role involves performing and leading highly skilled tree and roadside maintenance operations under limited supervision within the District 1 area. Responsibilities include removing hazardous trees, trimming limbs and brush for visibility, assessing tree hazards, and safely using climbing gear and bucket trucks. The position requires operating and maintaining specialized equipment such as chainsaws, pole pruners, and safety gear. This role may supervise or lead a team of Transportation Maintainers and ensures public and crew safety during all operations. Additional duties include snow and ice removal, storm cleanup, pothole patching, guardrail repairs, and responding to traffic incidents. The position is full-time, 40 hours per week, with a first shift schedule of 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, located in Vernon, CT. Requirements

  • Current State of Connecticut employee of the agency listed for at least six (6) months of full-time service or full-time equivalent service.
  • Possess and maintain a current CDL Class A or B with tank endorsement.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC).
  • Willingness to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever services are needed, including mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30.
  • Willingness to stay at work for the duration of storms, which could be up to several days, including holidays and weekends.
  • 30-mile residency from the posted job location.
  • Certified through the Department in aerial bucket truck operation and fall protection, which includes the use of a safety harness and trauma strap (prior to interview and skill evaluation practicum).
  • Three (3) years of experience in the construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance and repair of roadways, roadsides, bridges or airports, in work involving the operation and care of mechanical equipment or work in one of the recognized maintenance trades.
  • One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in the operation of complex equipment or the performance of skilled tasks.
  • Considerable knowledge of the construction, maintenance and repair techniques of roadways, roadsides, bridges or airports.
  • Considerable knowledge of the processes and materials used in the construction and maintenance of highway and bridges or airports.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Considerable ability to operate skillfully and make ordinary repairs to highly complex mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to utilize computer software.

Responsibilities

  • Operate various trucks including low bed type trailer tractor, hydraulic platform crane, tractor trailer with tilt trailer or twenty (20) cubic yard dump trailer, center line marking machine (truck), ten (10) wheel, GVW of fifty eight thousand (58,000) pounds and eight hundred (800) gallon tank, track-mounted skid steer with various attachments, glycol vacuum scrubber with eight (8) foot pickup header, payloader with snow pusher, airfield deicing truck with forty-five (45) foot spray boom, and double wing truck (driver).
  • Operate equipment such as motor graders, loader/backhoe, loader mounted snow blower (two thousand (2,000) ton per hour and over), snow broom, and liquid asphalt application/joint sealing machine.
  • Perform duties such as backhoe operation, post pounder operation, Vactor operation, welding, lead person in boundary stone setting, lead person in test borings, lead Vendor in Place (VIP) inspector, and trainer.
  • Perform highly skilled tasks in one or more of the following areas or trades: Construction, Maintenance, Mechanical repair, Carpentry, Masonry, Welding, Plumbing, Painting.
  • Perform highly skilled tree climbing work.
  • Perform sign erecting requiring complex rigging.
  • Operate as a Center Line Marking Machine (Rear Switch Operator).
  • Serve as District Equipment Coordinator/Radio Room operator (lead).
  • Serve as District Projects Records Coordinator.
  • Serve as Multi-Media First Aid Trainer.
  • Serve as Highway Operations Center System Operator.
  • Act as crew leader.
  • Supervise a materials management stockroom.
  • Perform wildlife hazard control.
  • Perform radio monitoring and communication.
  • Escort vendors, contractors, etc. in secure areas (state owned airports only).
  • Receive training in, stand by for and respond to fire and or crash emergency situations at state-owned airports.
  • Perform related duties as required.
