About The Position

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Region I Liability Claims Adjuster II. The successful candidate will be accountable for the investigation, evaluation, and disposition of tort claims by, against the department, administration of lapsed appropriation, indirect supervision of claims management for the Region I area that includes district 1.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, preferably with coursework in insurance, basic accounting, premedical, sociology and/or business administration. Related experience, preferably in insurance claims adjusting, in legal assistance, in casework or in benefit management, may be substituted for college, on a year-for-year basis.
  • Requires two years' progressively responsible professional work experience in workers' compensation and general liability claims adjustment.
  • Requires completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.

Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, investigates, evaluates, negotiates all non-injury tort claims made by, and against the department; ensures that claims are managed in compliance with federal, state laws and department policies, and procedures. Within assigned authority decides and settles claims.
  • Provides guidance to District Claims staff.
  • Assists with resource management of claim files and records, all active claim files, determinations of files, and records that may be stored offsite and in compliance with the State Records Act.
  • Coordinates with the Bureau of Operations to recommend, ensure proper use of, and revise policies and procedures for the use of the Motorist Caused Highway Damage (MCHD) Fund for the repair of department vehicles, equipment, and appurtenances.
  • Reviews financial transactions within claims, ensures payments are properly credited within the claim file, follows established protocols for the recordation and timely deposit of those resources.
  • Establishes invoices for Claims accounts receivable, prepares necessary changes to established invoices, and creates check lots for receivables.
  • Performs other duties as assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
