About The Position

This position oversees and assists crews in the maintenance and repair of pipes, catch basins, dirt streets, and ditches. This position also operates various types of heavy equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, front end loaders, and other types of equipment to assist with maintenance and repairs. This position is also responsible for assisting with cleanup during and after rainstorms, flooding, and other types of inclement weather. If you are our candidate for this job, you will oversee and assist crews in pipe maintenance and repair, storm drain and catch basin cleaning and repair, dirt street maintenance, and ditch maintenance; you will be supervising and assisting leaf collection crews during leaf season; performing snow removal operations during inclement weather; acting as support staff during emergency events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.; supervising assigned Stormwater crews; conducting employee performance evaluations; coordinating required safety training; implementing hiring and disciplinary actions for employees; other stormwater and street maintenance related duties. Joining our Transportation Maintenance Division will provide an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in the maintenance of critical infrastructure such as sidewalks, curb and gutter, asphalt, medians, and storm drains. As a member of our 222 person staff, you will contribute to maintenance of 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks; the upkeep of over 33,000 curb ramps; and the protection of 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes connecting more than 32,000 drainage inlets. The Stormwater Maintenance Unit is responsible for performing daily inspections, repairs, and maintenance of the City’s stormwater assets.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency
  • 3 to 5 years' experience in light to medium construction equipment operation, or related work OR Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
  • Experience supervising employees
  • Experience operating various types of heavy equipment
  • Experience in use of Microsoft Windows including Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Standard practices, methods, and materials of assigned work
  • Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices
  • Uses and properties of supplies and equipment
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, regulations
  • Following directions and meeting standards
  • Providing attention to detail in assignments
  • Comprehending reference books and manuals
  • Operating assigned tools and equipment

Responsibilities

  • Supervises Stormwater Maintenance crews
  • Assists with maintenance and repairs
  • Inspects completed work of crews
  • Completes work order and service requests in Cityworks
  • Performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
  • Completes employee evaluations, disciplinary actions
  • Will be required to work extended hours on rotating shifts during leaf collection, emergencies, and inclement weather
