About The Position

Stantec’s multi-disciplinary Transportation Group has an opportunity for a highly motivated Transportation Engineering Intern to support roadway, traffic, and bridge projects in a collaborative team environment. This position offers exposure to a range of transportation engineering assignments, which may include assisting with roadway and highway design, traffic engineering studies and analyses, traffic control design, bridge design support, structural calculations, plan production, construction observation, field data collection, stormwater and grading design, and preparation of reports, drawings, and construction documents using CAD software such as MicroStation, InRoads, OpenRoads, Power GeoPak, and related design tools in support of DOT, County, and City transportation projects. This is a paid internship position with potential for a part-time schedule during the semester and full-time hours during the summer, depending on office and project needs.

Requirements

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Basic understanding of civil engineering concepts related to transportation, roadway, traffic, drainage, grading, structures, or bridge design.
  • Ability to interpret sketches, drawings, plans, design standards, and similar technical materials.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to participate in a project team setting, take direction, prioritize assignments, and work independently when appropriate.
  • Ability to engage in creative and critical thought while supporting practical engineering solutions.
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering, transportation engineering, structural engineering, or a related engineering field.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with MicroStation, OpenRoads, InRoads, Power GeoPak, Bentley tools, or other CAD/design software is an asset.
  • Previous co-op, internship, design, drafting, field, or transportation-related experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record may be required for field assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Gather project data, including traffic volumes, crash reports, field conditions, bridge information, and other materials needed to support design decisions.
  • Prepare and assemble reports, drawings, calculations, plan sheets, and construction documents for roadway, traffic, and bridge projects.
  • Perform routine engineering calculations related to roadway geometry, grading, drainage, traffic operations, signal design, and structural components under the supervision of experienced staff.
  • Assist with CAD drafting, design, and plan development using MicroStation, OpenRoads, InRoads, Power GeoPak, Bentley tools, and other applicable software.
  • Support traffic engineering tasks such as intersection analysis, traffic forecasting, crash summaries, safety recommendations, and traffic control design.
  • Support bridge design tasks, including basic structural calculations, bridge plan development, interpretation of sketches and drawings, and verification of applicable standards.
  • Participate in field work, construction observation, and meetings with design teams, clients, agencies, and other project stakeholders as needed.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.
