The Transportation Engineer performs professional transportation engineering work, potentially in Transportation Planning or Traffic Studies, with minimal supervision. Responsibilities include reviewing development plans for compliance, acting as a liaison for various transportation projects, assisting with planning projects, potentially supervising staff, analyzing accident statistics, developing safety education, engaging in bicycle and pedestrian planning, managing contracts, providing traffic engineering advice, and conducting research. The Senior Transportation Engineer performs responsible, professional engineering work within the Traffic Engineering section, handling difficult traffic engineering problems and frequent public interaction. This role may direct and review the work of lower-level staff. Assignments are broad, requiring independent judgment in technical decision-making. Specific duties include conducting traffic studies, signal timing, ITS design and maintenance, policy creation, plan reviews, and acting as a technical expert. The Senior role is distinguished by the requirement of professional engineer registration and handling more complex assignments with minimal supervision.
