About The Position

This recruitment is PROMOTIONAL ONLY, meaning only permanent employees of the District can apply. There is currently one vacancy within the Transportation Department (8 hours per day, 5 days per week, 12 months per year). The role involves planning, coordinating, and scheduling District bus routes and schedules, assigning bus drivers to designated routes and special event trips, and driving a school bus or other transportation vehicle as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school
  • Three years of experience driving a bus
  • One year experience dispatching, planning, and scheduling bus routes
  • Valid Class A or B California Motor Vehicle Operator's license with passenger transportation, endorsement, "S", and air brake endorsements
  • Valid California Special Driver Certificate for school buses
  • Valid California Department of Motor Vehicles medical certificate
  • Valid California Highway Patrol approved First Aid Card (if required on Special Certificate)
  • Valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate, Form MCSA-5876
  • Current California Department of Motor Vehicles K-4 printout
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, rules, and regulations related to pupil transportation.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of methods, practices, and procedures of dispatching transportation vehicles.
  • Knowledge of District boundaries.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of operation of a computer and two-way radio.
  • Knowledge of telephone techniques and etiquette.
  • Knowledge of record-keeping techniques.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and schedule District bus routes and schedules.
  • Ability to assign bus drivers to designated routes and special event trips.
  • Ability to review routes and schedules to accommodate changes.
  • Ability to maintain a variety of logs, records, and files.
  • Ability to interpret, apply, and explain laws, codes, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including a computer and applicable software.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio.
  • Ability to observe legal and defensive driving practices.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule bus drivers and vehicles to ensure effective and efficient utilization.
  • Set up routes and schedules in accordance with established guidelines and update route sheets for drivers.
  • Arrange for substitute drivers as needed.
  • Plan the transportation network considering bell times, vehicle capacities, load projections, traffic patterns, and geographic considerations.
  • Coordinate the development and modification of routes to accommodate meetings and IEP requirements.
  • Operate a two-way radio to dispatch drivers and vehicles, and to fulfill special transportation requests.
  • Communicate with drivers regarding schedule or route changes, vehicle breakdowns, accidents, emergencies, and road conditions.
  • Notify drivers or authorities as appropriate.
  • Communicate transportation assignments effectively with parents and administrators.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Department and faculty/staff for field trip planning.
  • Provide personnel and material estimates for field trips.
  • Communicate with outside agencies to contract buses as required.
  • Assign field trips to District school bus drivers.
  • Maintain logs, records, and files related to transportation, including driver attendance and Individualized Health Plans.
  • Assist bus drivers with the accurate completion of required reports.
  • Maintain records related to District vehicle accidents and perform accident investigations as assigned.
  • Operate office equipment including a copier, fax machine, computer, and applicable software.
  • Drive a school bus to cover routes and special events as needed.
