Under the supervision of the Vice President of Child Care and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Transportation Director is responsible for supervising the transportation team, managing drivers to ensure compliance with safety and operational procedures, and transporting participants. This role involves overseeing and managing the bus fleet, including ensuring all vehicles receive timely preventative maintenance (PM) and utilizing mechanical acumen to address any issues that arise. The Transportation Director is responsible for ensuring high standards of service and safety for members and guests while supporting the YMCA’s mission to serve the community.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 1-year supervisory experience required.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to obtain/maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and guide a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact positively with people of all ages and abilities.
  • Ability to independently perform detailed work with strict adherence to transportation policies.
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2 required within 60 days of hire.
  • Complete and maintain required trainings, including New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually thereafter.
  • Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check and Child Protective Services check.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations, such as tracking vehicle mileage and fuel usage.
  • Ability to reason and solve problems with minimal direction.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to endure prolonged kneeling, standing, and bending.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations effectively.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including traveling to different locations and participating in YMCA events.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts to practical situations.
  • Must be able to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as budget preparation and program planning.
  • Ability to reason and define problems with limited direction as to means and results.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for cleaning building.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of this position, which include mobility of travel to conferences, touring facilities, properties and participating in promotional and special events sponsored by the Association.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and manage a team of drivers, ensuring compliance with all safety regulations, operational procedures, and driving schedules.
  • Complete regular inspections of vehicles to ensure they meet safety standards and are properly maintained.
  • Oversee the proper completion of pre- and post-trip checks for all transportation vehicles.
  • Administer a system of record-keeping and reporting for transportation activities, including tracking vehicle maintenance and driver performance through our work order and preventative maintenance system (Facility Dude).
  • Drive a bus consistently to provide safe and efficient transportation for program participants and members.
  • Work with the Vice President of Property and Construction to coordinate and arrange regular preventative and restorative maintenance for the transportation fleet.
  • Work with the Risk Management Director to promote safety by conducting quarterly audits of transportation procedures, including reviewing pre- and post-trip checks, gas levels, mileage, cleanliness, and maintenance to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Conduct training for new and current drivers, ensuring they are familiar with safety protocols and operational procedures.
  • Ensure all drivers comply with regulations and maintain accurate logs of driving hours, routes, and vehicle inspections.
  • Act as a leader during emergency situations, following the Emergency Communication Action Plan, and ensuring driver safety.
  • Act as a liaison for any accidents or incidents related to transportation and report them appropriately.
  • Ensure that all drivers are trained on and follow the YMCA's safety procedures for transporting passengers.
  • Work closely with Human Resources and Risk Management for hiring, including pre-hire ride-alongs, and conduct annual ride-alongs with existing staff to assess performance and safety compliance.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
