About The Position

DOWL is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Transportation Designer 2 to join our growing team and help shape a wide range of transportation projects from bike paths and sidewalks to highways and interchanges. In this role, you'll take on moderately complex design and drafting tasks, contribute to roadway layouts, 3D modeling, and assist with cost estimates, construction quantities, technical reports, and project specifications. Working under the guidance of a licensed professional engineer, you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience while expanding your skills in CAD drafting, geometric design, and transportation engineering principles. This position is ideal for someone with a strong work ethic, a desire to learn, and developing proficiency in design software who’s eager to grow in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • 2 years of experience required
  • 1 year of experience required with advanced degree
  • EIT/EI required
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Solid understanding of technical fundamentals
  • Basic understanding of scopes, schedules, and budgets.
  • Moderate understanding of AASHTO and FHWA design codes.
  • Moderate understanding of local client design codes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD C3D.
  • Proficiency in Microstation Connect and OpenRoads (if applicable).
  • Basic proficiency in task-specific software (e.g., AutoTurn, GuideSign).
  • Ability to follow the direction of others, ask good questions, retain information, and share information with those less experienced.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, and use hands.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Develops roadway layouts, 3D modeling, and assists with cost estimates, construction quantities, technical reports, and project specifications.
  • Performs basic technical tasks with limited oversight.
  • Performs quality control of basic deliverables.
  • Reviews, interprets, and employs appropriate design guidance from technical memos and reports.
  • Produces technical reports and memos.
  • Produces specifications.
  • Produces construction quantity calculations and cost estimates.
  • Produces design documents and construction plans.
  • Predicts the level of effort for individual tasks and successfully delivers tasks within that level of effort.
  • Monitors results on moderately complex projects.
  • Understands and employs AASHTO and FHWA design codes.
  • Understands and employs local client design codes.
  • Responds to emails, attends meetings, and answers questions/comments with limited autonomy.
  • Performs moderately complex technical work on projects for the assigned market sector.
  • Operates with limited autonomy – work is supervised and reviewed by more senior staff.
