About The Position

DOWL is seeking an enthusiastic Transportation Intern to provide engineering assistance on a wide variety of engineering projects. This internship program aims to provide personal, one-on-one mentorship to help candidates gain knowledge and experience with design projects. The intern will use various applications and software to analyze, develop, draft, write, and prepare design packages to support assigned engineering disciplines such as Transportation & Structures, Water & Environmental Services, Civil & Land Development, and Construction-Related Services groups. Duties may include performing field work to gather data, providing construction administration support, and inspections services. Requirements

  • One to two years of college-level course work in pursuit of a baccalaureate degree in civil engineering.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to clients and co-workers.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to prioritize special projects and daily workload to ensure that work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts, such as probability and statistical analysis, and fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Driving is an essential job function or a valid driver’s license is required to support legitimate business purposes.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior work experience in construction or civil engineering related fields is desirable.
  • ARC GIS & AutoCAD Civil 3D knowledge and experience is highly desirable.
  • Prior work experience in construction, traffic, or other civil engineering related fields is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with field investigations, analysis of alternative solutions, project design, and construction inspection.
  • Perform engineering calculations in support of design projects.
  • Tabulate bid items and calculate construction bid quantities from plans and specifications to estimate construction costs.
  • Perform AutoCAD drafting support.
  • Prepare and route project related correspondence and record keeping.
  • Assist with writing and editing of construction specifications and technical reports.
  • Other engineering related duties as assigned.
