About The Position

ATCS is seeking enthusiastic and motivated students for its 2027 Summer Internship Program, which runs from May/June through August 2027. This internship supports the Transportation Design team in ATCS’s Richmond, Virginia office. Interns gain hands-on experience and contribute to roadway and transportation infrastructure projects while working alongside engineers and other professionals. The role provides exposure to transportation engineering and design and to the day-to-day work of a transportation design team.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
• Interest in transportation engineering, roadway design, and transportation infrastructure.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.

Nice To Haves

• Previous coursework related to transportation, roadway design, or civil engineering design.
• Previous internship or related experience.
• Exposure to MicroStation, OpenRoads, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or other engineering or design software.

Responsibilities

• Support engineers with the planning and design of roadway and transportation projects.
• Assist with preparing design plans, drawings, calculations, and other project deliverables.
• Use engineering and design software to support roadway design and plan development.
• Assist with collecting, organizing, and analyzing project data.
• Support design tasks related to roadway geometry, grading, drainage, and other transportation improvements.
• Collaborate with engineers and other team members to complete project tasks.
• Participate in project meetings and gain exposure to the day-to-day work of a transportation design team.
• Assist with other technical and administrative tasks as needed.
