About The Position

Join the Department of Transportation as a Transportation Construction Inspector and take part in building reliable transportation routes. These openings provide hands-on experience and opportunities to learn from real projects. You will help ensure that roadways are built to the highest standards for the traveling public. This position focuses on inspecting construction work and materials to ensure they meet approved standards for safe and accurate project completion.

Requirements

  • Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
  • Meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Able to perform essential job functions.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect phases of highway construction work for compliance with plans and specifications
  • Check placement of concrete, asphalt, and drainage materials during construction
  • Assist with checking grades, elevations, and stake-out details with contractors
  • Complete diaries, calculations, and project records manually or electronically
  • Interact with staff, agencies, and the public to support project administration
