About The Position

Hoag Health, the top-ranked health system in Orange County, California, is seeking a collaborative, patient-centered, and mission-driven Transplant Hepatologist to join our growing Liver Transplant and Hepatology Program based in Newport Beach, California. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering exceptional kidney care while supporting the development and growth of Hoag's comprehensive liver transplant program. The Transplant Hepatologist will provide high-quality inpatient and outpatient hepatology care for patients with acute and chronic liver disease while partnering closely with transplant surgery, primary care, hospital medicine, oncology, critical care, and other specialists to ensure seamless care across the continuum. The physician will participate in the evaluation and management of liver transplant candidates and recipients, provide consultative hepatology services, and contribute to quality improvement, program development, and regulatory readiness initiatives. In this position, you will join an innovative and collaborative physician team committed to clinical excellence, multidisciplinary care, and improving outcomes for patients with advanced liver disease and liver transplantation. As a foundational member of Hoag's expanding transplant program, you will have the unique opportunity to help shape clinical workflows, establish best practices, grow regional referral relationships, and build one of Southern California's premier liver transplant programs.

Requirements

  • M.D. or D.O. degree from a fully accredited medical or osteopathic school of medicine
  • Successful completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in Internal Medicine
  • Successful completion of an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Gastroenterology
  • Successful completion of an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Transplant Hepatology
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Gastroenterology
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Transplant Hepatology
  • Demonstrated expertise in the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis, portal hypertension, hepatocellular carcinoma, viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, metabolic liver disease, acute liver failure, and complications of end-stage liver disease
  • Experience caring for hospitalized hepatology patients, liver transplant candidates, liver transplant recipients, and patients with advanced liver disease in both inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Active, unobstructed California medical license, or the ability to obtain one
  • Full prescriptive authority and an active DEA in California, or the ability to obtain one
  • Ability to successfully complete Hoag Health’s credentialing process

Nice To Haves

  • Experience practicing within an established liver transplant program and participating in multidisciplinary transplant care is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Providing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient hepatology care for patients with acute and chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis, portal hypertension, hepatocellular carcinoma, metabolic and autoimmune liver disease, viral hepatitis, and acute liver failure.
  • Participating in liver transplant evaluations, outpatient hepatology and transplant clinics, inpatient hepatology consultation services, and the longitudinal management of liver transplant candidates and recipients.
  • Participating in multidisciplinary conferences, development of evidence-based clinical pathways, and collaboration with transplant surgery, transplant anesthesia, critical care, oncology, interventional radiology, infectious disease, primary care, hospital medicine, and other specialists to provide coordinated, patient-centered care.
  • Participating in multidisciplinary liver transplant selection conferences, hepatology case conferences, quality meetings, educational conferences, morbidity and mortality conferences, and departmental meetings.
