About The Position

The Transmission Strategy and Development Engineer Senior evaluates APS’s transmission system and develops long-term transmission projects that support delivery of new generation resources to serve growing load. Projects may be APS self-builds or involve participation in third-party developer projects. The role conducts transmission studies of reliability and deliverability impacts, leads multiple projects from initiation through handoff to the development team, and coordinates technical work with external study consultants. It focuses on longer-term transmission projects that enable resource delivery and transmission capacity opportunities, rather than NERC standards or traditional capital planning for general system growth. The engineer is expected to keep current with new developments, technologies, and industry best practices. The position works in a hybrid arrangement, with employees expected to work about 40% of their time in person at an APS or other non-home-office location. Employees are expected to reside in Arizona, or in New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees. Working from home requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic setup. Role types may change based on business needs.

  • Serve as the technical contact for third-party consultants by answering questions, confirming study scope and assumptions, coordinating base cases, and coordinating with APS Transmission Planning.
  • Advise the New Generation Development team on new-resource interconnection, reliability impacts, and the ability to deliver resources.
  • Perform technical studies using system simulation software to strategically plan transmission-system expansion.
  • Take initiative to remove barriers and use available resources to achieve results.
  • Coordinate with outside utilities and developers to identify joint transmission opportunities.
  • Represent APS on regional committees.
  • Lead multiple projects simultaneously, providing oversight, progress reports, and coordination from initiation through handoff to the development team.
  • Prepare and review engineering plans, analyses, specifications, cost estimates, evaluations, studies, technical reviews, investigations, and verifications.
  • Ensure engineering analyses are technically sound, cost-effective, and compliant with applicable standards, codes, regulations, and design, regulatory, operating, and maintenance requirements.
  • Identify potential schedule or quality problems and initiate corrective action.
  • Coordinate with customers and other departments to align project objectives and work scope with customer requirements, budget, and schedule.
  • Present technical data and project or study results to customers, management, colleagues, and other audiences.
  • Provide technical guidance, leadership, and support to less experienced engineers.
  • Help solve organizational problems, challenge assumptions, develop long-range strategies, and leverage industry and organizational resources to resolve technical issues.
