About The Position

ISO New England is seeking a Transmission Planning Engineer to join their focused, passionate, team-oriented, and results-driven Transmission Planning Team. This team plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in New England and is at the forefront of the region's transition to clean energy. The team is responsible for studying the future of the New England transmission system up to 2050, examining the impacts of clean energy resources (solar, wind, battery storage) and increased power consumption due to electrification. The role involves developing a clean, affordable, and reliable 21st-century regional electric grid. The team acts as the Planning Coordinator for the New England transmission system and offers talented engineers challenging work, growth potential, opportunities to interact with stakeholders, and a respectful team environment. The position is currently located in Windsor, CT, with a planned move to Holyoke, MA in 2028.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • The ability to complete studies to assess system reliability and determine transmission system solutions to resolve concerns
  • The ability to develop data, assumptions, methodology and procedures for use in reliability studies of the New England bulk power system
  • The ability to perform analysis to support NEPOOL, NPCC, and NERC Committee and Working Group work on regional and national transmission planning issues
  • The ability to interact with stakeholders to seek input and address their concerns with respect to transmission system analysis
  • The ability to develop and recommend new business processes and Planning Procedures to the management of Transmission Planning
  • The ability to provide assistance in general Transmission Planning group administration
  • Proficiency in applying planning criteria and conducting computer simulations of transmission system performance
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision
  • High level of proficiency in both oral and written communication

Nice To Haves

  • A power systems concentration in Electrical Engineering
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • Experience in electric system operations and/or transmission planning
  • Professional Engineering License

Responsibilities

  • Perform transmission planning studies
  • Simulate electric transmission system behavior
  • Analyze results
  • Develop recommendations to ensure the continued reliability and economic efficiency of the New England electric power system
  • Provide technical and procedural leadership, coordination, and facilitation within ISO-NE and among stakeholders.
  • Complete studies to assess system reliability and determine transmission system solutions to resolve concerns
  • Develop data, assumptions, methodology and procedures for use in reliability studies of the New England bulk power system
  • Perform analysis to support NEPOOL, NPCC, and NERC Committee and Working Group work on regional and national transmission planning issues
