About The Position

SPP is seeking an Engineer I, Transmission Planning to primarily assist more experienced engineers in building planning models, running simulations for reliability and economic analysis, conducting engineering analyses for the Integrated Transmission Planning process, performing Tariff Studies, and supporting special studies for engineering planning. The Engineer I will be expected to be proactive, support the team, and learn the fundamental concepts of transmission planning. This role involves developing a fundamental understanding of the SPP transmission system and gaining knowledge of relevant software. The incumbent will complete specific assignments related to Integrated Transmission Planning, tariff studies, special studies, or tasks requested by management or the Transmission Planning team, as directed by a Senior/Lead Engineer or Supervisor. A basic familiarity with the SPP Open Access Transmission Tariff, FERC & NERC governing documents, SPP By-Laws, SPP Criteria, and the SPP Committee structure is expected, with a more detailed understanding required based on support needs. As part of a stakeholder-driven environment, engineers must develop positive stakeholder relationships to achieve SPP objectives. The Engineer I will assist with specific assignments, develop necessary technical stakeholder relationships for data collection and feedback, and exercise basic technical decisions under the oversight of experienced engineers. They will provide basic technical support to help project groups meet aggressive timelines and communicate openly with teammates about knowledge development and work status. The role requires embracing and promoting the SPP Culture, Mission, and Core Values in all aspects of work and understanding and complying with SPP Policies and Procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Engineering from a university that meets the requirements to sit for the Professional Engineering exam (typically ABET accredited or a graduate degree from a college with ABET accreditation).
  • Degree should be in a calculus-based engineering field; preferred degree programs are Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Systems Engineering.
  • Competent with the administrative and communication tools for word processing, spreadsheet development, and time keeping, as a minimum.
  • Basic proficiency with most SPP power systems analysis tools with a solid command of several SPP tools and/or processes.
  • Practical understanding of the SPP Open Access Transmission Tariff, FERC & NERC governing documents, SPP By-Laws, SPP Criteria and the SPP Committee structure.
  • Strong inter-personal and team work skills along with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Competent working skills with communication and data handling software such as Microsoft Office© Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate with Transmission Planning teammates, providing open feedback about knowledge development and work status.

  • Incorporate a fundamental working understanding of the SPP Culture Drivers, Mission and Core Values and apply this directly to all engineering assignments.
  • Understand and comply with SPP Policies and Procedures.
