This position is located in Kokomo, IN, and has a residency requirement: you must reside within 30 miles of the assigned operations site. The starting pay is $37.02 per hour.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or applicable equivalent either in job training or study.
  • Indicated physical ability to climb and execute duties on poles.
  • Indicated ability to use hand tools, digging tools, and ropes.
  • Must qualify for automobile operator's license.
  • Ability to successfully complete the Virtual Assessment for Lineworkers (VAL).
  • Ability to successfully complete Physical Abilities Test (PAT).
  • Ability to obtain Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL).
  • Must reside within 30 miles of the assigned operations site.
  • Must be able to relocate from current residence within 9 months of start date (relocation at own expense).
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future.

  • Some previous experience in the handling of materials desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Under direct supervision, assist employees of higher line classifications in installing, removing, and maintaining transmission and distribution poles, towers, conductors, transformers, pole top switches, cable, and other line equipment.
  • Perform basic operations required in the installing, removing, and maintaining of poles, towers, guys, arms, platforms, and other components of line or equipment supports.
  • Assist in framing poles, attaching transformer supports, arm assemblies, and appurtenances to poles.
  • Help in stringing, sagging, and tying line conductors, and in installing and removing insulators and cable lengths.
  • Assist in operations required for installing, removing, and maintaining line equipment units and associated devices such as transformers, switches, voltage regulators, constant current regulators, lightning arresters, and cutouts.
  • Assist in or perform basic operations for installing, removing, and relocating services, entrance runs, metering enclosures, and self-contained watt-hour meters.
  • Participate in installing and removing transformer-rated watt-hour meters and service street lamp units, replacing lamps, cleaning glassware, and painting fixtures.
  • Unload, reload, and store poles, and help in moving and relocating heavy pieces of apparatus.
  • Set out warning signs, clear project sites of obstacles, and dig holes or trenches for poles, anchors, or cable installations.
  • Perform other related work as required, such as driving trucks, tree trimming, tending payout or take-up reels, making tool and equipment repairs, minor repairs to trucks, aiding in patrolling or switching during emergencies, helping in hot stick work and service work, attending to needs of employees engaged in checking connections, painting work equipment, and disposing of brush.
  • Perform, or assist in, under immediate supervision, higher skilled or more involved operations as may be safely assigned for comprehensive training, utilizing infrequent work opportunities or coping with unusual situations.
  • Maintain work equipment and areas in a clean, orderly condition.
  • Continuously observe Company safety rules and practices.
  • Check the condition of safety equipment.
  • Attend scheduled safety meetings.
  • Participate in artificial respiration practice as required.
  • Become familiar with safety manuals, rules, and special procedures prescribed by the Company.
