About The Position

ECU Department of Transit is currently seeking Transit Vehicle Operators to perform a variety of duties related to public transportation. This role involves completing a comprehensive training program, operating transit vehicles safely and efficiently, assisting passengers, and maintaining communication with dispatch. The position requires adherence to schedules, providing customer information, and performing administrative tasks such as report writing. Operators will also be responsible for ensuring the safety and comfort of all passengers, including those with disabilities, and will engage in ongoing professional development.

Requirements

  • Must be a student.
  • Must be able to work at least 15-20 hours per week.
  • Must be able to work variable times of day and night, including some nights, weekends, holidays, and special events.
  • Must be able to operate a wheelchair lift and assist passengers with disabilities.
  • Must be able to push a manual wheelchair up a steep ramp if necessary.
  • Must be able to write reports and complete forms.
  • Must complete a training course including online, classroom, written work, quizzes/tests, and behind-the-wheel training.
  • Must familiarize self with system and safety features, geography and roadways of assigned routes and service areas, and traffic rules, regulations, and laws.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a training course involving online training, classroom training, written work, quizzes/tests, and behind-the-wheel training.
  • Familiarize self with system and safety features; geography and roadways of assigned routes and service areas; traffic rules, regulations, and laws.
  • Operate a transit vehicle to pick up, transport, and discharge passengers while adhering to the route schedule and maintaining a pleasant and courteous manner.
  • Provide information on bus services to customers, including bus schedules, routes, and local information.
  • Receive and transmit two-way radio communications regarding accidents, incidents, emergencies, criminal activities, or any other authorized ECU Transit business while utilizing judgment and discretion to ensure customer and individual safety.
  • Perform vehicle operations at variable times of day and night.
  • May work outside regular business hours as required by service demands.
  • Operate a wheelchair lift, secure passengers’ mobility devices, and assist passengers with disabilities with boarding, riding, and alighting in a safe manner including pushing a manual wheelchair up a steep ramp if necessary.
  • Write reports and complete forms as required.
  • May prepare detailed written reports concerning accidents/incidents, breakdowns, and mechanical defects as required at the end of a shift.
  • Complete ongoing training courses for professional development provided by ECU Transit during the duration of employment.
