About The Position

The Transit Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and coordinating daily transit operations on and off the Liberty University campus. This includes supervising bus operators, dispatchers, and support personnel; ensuring compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations; and maintaining efficient and safe transit services. The role requires flexibility to work during school breaks, weekends, holidays, and in emergency situations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 3 years in transit operations, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and transit management software.
  • Ability to make quick decisions and solve problems effectively.
  • Knowledge of FMCSA regulations and transit safety standards.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University to a variety of business and community customers and associates.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
  • Regularly required to travel to local, on and off-campus locations.
  • Frequently required to sit for extended periods to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak in order to effectively communicate orally.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the building.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business.
  • Regularly lift up to 50+ pounds.
  • Use of one’s personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) is required for travel in the performance of the essential functions of this position.
  • Proof of a valid Virginia Commercial driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Transportation, Logistics, or a related field preferred.
  • FMCSA certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all Transit operations to the assigned shift bus operators, making sure buses keep an even spacing on routes and that routes are being run correctly according to the route timetable.
  • Performs duties of a Transit Supervisor while on a set scheduled shift or on a rotating scheduled shift; this is to include weekends and weeknights on and off regular school hours.
  • Ability to respond in a timely manner as emergency needs arise.
  • Performs semi-annual driver check rides.
  • Answers incoming Transit phone calls.
  • Comes up and implements a “relief drivers’ program” in the event that a driver is unable to work their assigned shift.
  • Drive fixed routes or special shuttles on an as-needed and/or as emergency needs arise.
  • Assists as needed with: transit paperwork, scheduling of day to day operation functions, scheduling drivers, etc.
  • Assists Transit management to ensure that Transit drivers are trained and are familiar with all on and off campus routes.
  • Works with Transit management to ensure all Liberty Transit commercial vehicles meet or exceed FMCSA standards and are kept in compliance with said standards through all necessary inspections as required by the FMCSA.
  • Provides quality customer service and responds to public inquiries and requests for service in a courteous manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • As Essential Personnel, you are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns, and any emergencies, including clean-up required because of severe weather incidents.
  • Transit employees are essential to the overall success of Commencement (May), Orientation, and Move-in (August) weekend events and special events that are scheduled in facilities throughout the year and must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise.
  • Performs snow removal activities as assigned, such as shoveling, salting, etc.
  • Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services, and leading industry performance benchmarks.
