About The Position

Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is seeking dynamic, customer-service-oriented, and energetic individuals to join their committed team. The Transit Security Officer is responsible for preventing crimes and security incidents at HRT facilities, properties, and aboard transit vehicles and vessels, as well as protecting HRT assets, personnel, and patrons. This role requires close coordination with local law enforcement and emergency services, responding to and remediating security incidents, and ensuring the continuity of transit operations. Other duties may include documenting security issues, enforcing HRT policies, conducting patrols, monitoring surveillance systems, using telecommunications tools, conducting investigations, carrying a weapon for de-escalation and defense, preventing unauthorized access, and managing records in compliance with HRT policies.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of security operations, safety practices in a business environment, and enforcement procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with staff and the public.

  • Ability to write and investigate required reports.
  • Ability to make independent and good judgment decisions within proper policy and procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of state, local, and federal criminal statutes affecting security work of Hampton Roads Transit.
  • Understanding of alarm, access control, and surveillance systems in HRT facilities.
  • Skilled and certified in the use of a firearm and other defensive weapons as applicable.
  • Ability to work under pressure and otherwise stressful situations.
  • Skilled in the use of miscellaneous computer applications (e.g., word processing, Excel).
  • Skilled in de-escalation techniques and incident management.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems and associated software applications.
  • Basic problem-solving skills associated with software applications.
  • Current certification as an Armed Security Officer through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), or the ability to obtain this certification within 60 days of the start date.
  • Current Firearms Endorsement registration, or the ability to obtain this certification within 60 days of the start date.
  • Two (2) years of law enforcement experience or five (5) years as a professional armed security officer.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Military experience in a security-related assignment accepted in lieu of private security or law enforcement, with honorable discharge.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Acquire a Virginia Driver’s License within 60 days after the date of hire (in instances when an out-of-state license is not the applicant’s current state of residence).
  • This position is classified as essential personnel.

Nice To Haves

  • Two-Year or Four-Year degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
  • Public Transportation Security experience.

Responsibilities

  • Prevention of crimes and security incidents at HRT facilities, properties, or aboard transit vehicles and vessels.
  • Protection of HRT assets or personnel, as well as patrons in the transit environment.
  • Close coordination with local law enforcement and emergency services in response to security or safety incidents.
  • Responding to and remediating active security incidents or other emergencies and ensuring continuity of transit operations.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by Security Services department management.
  • Assuring that all security issues are properly documented in daily logs or other reports.
  • Assisting in any security-related issues as identified or directed.
  • Enforcing HRT policies and procedures for personnel in the transit environment.
  • Performing proactive patrols of facilities or other HRT assets on foot or from a vehicle.
  • Monitoring video surveillance systems and card access control systems.
  • Using telecommunications tools to communicate with HRT personnel or emergency services.
  • Conducting investigations or other special assignments to address security concerns.
  • Carrying a weapon for de-escalation and defensive purposes.
  • Preventing unauthorized access to HRT sites or services.
  • Managing records created and received in compliance with the Hampton Roads Transit Records Management Policies and Procedures.
