About The Position

SunTran Transit Operator I, II, or III. Starting Salary: $45,991 - $54,670/year DOE. Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $68,987 - $82,004/year, which is the maximum salary for this position as of December 2025. Operates City of St. George transit vehicles of various sizes in a safe manner over assigned routes according to established time schedules, while maintaining order in the vehicle and providing courteous service.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Directly related experience may substitute for education.
  • Previous experience driving public transit vehicles is preferred.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Transit operator experience of one (1) year or more.
  • Transit operator experience of two (2) years or more.
  • Possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver License with passenger endorsement.
  • Possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver License with passenger and air brakes endorsements.
  • Possess a current DOT Medical Card.
  • Attended class and completed 6 TAPTCO Transit Operator Development courses each year and scored 70% on the Course Mastery Test.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills necessary when interacting with customers.
  • Must be able to react quickly to situations that could create safety and customer security problems.
  • Successfully read map and schedule information.
  • Communicate orally or in writing.
  • Basic reading, writing, and spoken language ability.
  • Basic math with ability to determine correct fare and make change.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to see for the purpose of operating a vehicle during day and night time conditions, reading, and observing passengers.
  • All transit vehicles in the fleet
  • Pass mandatory and random drug screening
  • Read and write English and interpret traffic signs, maps, schedules and posted memos
  • Respond professionally to passenger requests or questions, and all two-way radio communications
  • Perform under a variety of pressures and deal with distractions while driving
  • Take direction from assigned supervisor
  • Automated Vehicle Locator (AVL) and Automated Voice Announcement (AVA) systems and able to train other Transit Operators in how to operate the systems properly.
  • All routes and time points for the purpose of proof-reading passenger count sheets, maps, and schedules.
  • Laws, DOT Safety Regulations and policies governing the safe transport of passengers, and ability to teach/communicate/incorporate these laws in a training setting.
  • Train transit operators in a classroom setting as well as on the road
  • Complete special projects or training assignments with minimal supervision

Nice To Haves

  • CPR and First Aid certified desired.
  • Bilingual ability (English/Spanish) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operates transit buses of various sizes over assigned routes in accordance with specific manifest instructions, and provides safe, secure, and comfortable services to users of the transit system in accordance with division standard operating procedures.
  • Collects appropriate customer fares, ensures the comfort of passengers, maintains order among customers, and handles volatile situations according to standard operating procedures.
  • Promotes positive passenger relations by announcing bus stops, assisting customers with fare and routing information, explaining established passenger policies and procedures, providing directions to customers, and communicating with special needs customers according to parameters.
  • Files special incident reports, completes daily reports, performs daily inspections of vehicles, reports any vehicle operational or maintenance problems to the dispatcher or supervisor in a timely manner, and completes other reports as required.
  • Assures that transit vehicles are operated in accordance with established customer schedules.
  • Operates a two-way radio in a safe manner.
  • Cooperates with the investigation of any customer complaints.
  • Attends and successfully completes all transit training as scheduled by the supervisor.
  • Assists with the collection of data for the planning/scheduling of transit services.
  • Assists with conducting outreach activities of the division.
  • Assists with vehicle cleaning and daily maintenance of interior and exterior of bus.
  • May be assigned to assist with other activities needed to run the division such as clerical tasks, answering telephones, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Performs daily pre-inspection and post-inspection of buses in order to ensure maximum safety in operation of the vehicle, communicates both verbally and in writing about safety concerns to supervisor and the fleet maintenance department.
  • Maintains a high standard of customer service, two-way radio communication, and appearance.
  • Assists with conducting outreach activities of the division and with installation of bus stop poles, signs and maps.
  • Assist Transit Operator I employees and co-workers with instruction about proper operation of buses, answer questions and provide clarification of policies and procedures when warranted and appropriate.
  • Assists with SunTran training program on route and in a classroom setting.
