Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Valid Class B North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger (P) Endorsement
  • Six (6) months of verifiable experience operating a similar or larger commercial vehicle
  • Ability to drive a transit bus in typical urban traffic, and work well under time constraints and stress
  • Flexibility to work various schedules, including fill-ins, split shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays (vacation and holiday leave subject to coverage needs)
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in English
  • Hearing/Speaking: Required to communicate effectively with internal and external customers (co-workers, citizens, and applicants).
  • Visual Abilities: Far Acuity: Must have clear vision at 20 feet or more to safely drive and navigate traffic (corrected to 20/25). Near Acuity: Must have clear vision at 20 inches or less to operate controls and read instruments (corrected to 20/30). Depth Perception: Ability to judge distances for tasks like seating passengers and vehicle operations. Field of Vision: Must have a broad field of vision for surrounding traffic, signs, and instruments. Accommodation: Ability to quickly shift focus between inside bus conditions and external traffic.
  • Physical Strength: Light to Medium Work, with the ability to exert up to 30 pounds of force occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, and negligible force constantly for handling materials.
  • Physical Demands: Reaching: Extending hands or arms. Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, or working with hands. Fingering: Picking, pinching, or working with fingers.
  • Mental Activity/Requirements: Reasoning: Ability to apply logical thinking, public personnel laws, and exercise good judgment in various situations. Mathematics Ability: Essential for making change, counting money, and preparing reports. Language Ability: Read: Ability to interpret manuals, street names, schedules, and instructions. Write: Ability to complete required reports. Speak: Clear and effective communication with colleagues, the public, and via PA system/radio.
  • Environmental Conditions: Physical Surroundings: Work both inside and outside in various weather conditions (rain, sleet, snow, etc.), especially when assisting passengers or at terminals. Hazards: Exposure to traffic jams, accidents, and OSHA standards for bloodborne pathogens.
  • Candidates selected for employment must undergo (a.) a drug screening, in accordance with the City’s drug and alcohol policy and (b.) a background screening to determine whether there is any current, pending, or previous charge, conviction or other infraction deemed incompatible with service in the capacity for which the candidate is being hired.
  • Certain positions are considered so critical to the health and safety of others that a candidate cannot be placed in any such position without passing a pre-placement physical exam.

Responsibilities

  • Operating the bus on assigned routes and schedules, ensuring safe and timely transportation for passengers.
  • Performing pre-departure inspections of the bus and related equipment, reporting any defects to ensure smooth and safe operations.
  • Maintaining trip records including fare collections, mileage, and vehicle conditions, keeping accurate logs for each route.
  • Assisting passengers in boarding and alighting, including those using wheelchairs or other mobility devices, and ensuring their safety by securing wheelchairs with tie-down straps.
  • Collecting fares and issuing tickets, including handling transfer slips to ensure passengers’ journeys are smooth and seamless.
  • Announcing bus stops clearly, so passengers are aware of their next destination.
  • Providing basic schedule information to passengers, answering questions about routes and arrival times.
  • Communicating via two-way radio to report traffic delays, accidents, downed traffic signs, and faulty signals to office staff and other personnel.
  • Performing post-shift inspections of the bus and reporting any defects, ensuring the vehicle is ready for the next operator.
  • Completing incident and accident reports or documenting any unusual circumstances to ensure accurate records.
  • Adhering to safety regulations at all times and following prescribed accident procedures when necessary.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned to support smooth transit operations.
  • Ensuring all work complies with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies, maintaining a safe environment for all passengers and staff.
