About The Position

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners, Transportation Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Transit Mechanic (Bus Maintenance). Must possess a valid Driver's License and be able to work varying shifts (days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays) at multiple work locations. Under general supervision, performs a variety of journey-level diesel mechanic and related mass transit vehicle maintenance/repair work. Junior Transit Mechanic wage increases are determined by the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1267 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Requirements

• Possession of a Valid Driver’s License
• Requires a minimum of one (1) year automotive experience or heavy-duty equipment maintenance experience, or enrollment in an accredited vocational training program in a field of study closely related to the area of assignment.
• Ability to work varying shifts in a 24/7 operation as assigned (days, afternoons, weekends and holidays).
• Ability to report to multiple work locations as needed.
• Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake and Passenger Transport Endorsement within 90 days of employment.

• 608 HVAC Certification
• Certification or Graduation from an approved vocational training program in maintenance or a closely related field.
• One (1) year of transportation experience
• Two (2+) years of automotive vehicle maintenance experience

Responsibilities

• Changes engine and differential oils, transmission fluids, and associated filters.
• Fills bus windshield washer fluid tanks.
• Replaces transit bus wiper blades.
• Fills/services transit bus power steering and hydraulic oil tank reservoirs.
• Replaces leaking bus wheel hubs.
• Inspects/Removes bus wheels.
• Performs test drives of buses.
• Performs other related mechanical work as required.
• Inspects/documents buses for broken glass, burned out lights, accident damage, etc. and reports damages to proper authorities.
• Performs odometer readings.
• Checks engine oil, transmission oil and other fluids.
• Refuels buses.
• Performs detailed cleaning of bus interiors and exteriors including sweeping and mopping floors; cleaning windows and seats; collecting and disposing of trash; washing exterior of buses including wheels and rims.
• Drives bus through automatic wash, parks bus in a designated parking area.
• Washes engines and electrical compartments.
• Assists in the maintenance of transit buildings and grounds.
• Cleans shop bays and garage areas.
• Detailed cleaning of bus ADA Ramps, ADA appurtenances and securement systems.
• Detailed cleaning of HVAC vents and bus undercarriages.
• Inspection of bus for FTA, FDOT and Safety Compliance.
• Performs other related CSA work as required.
