About The Position

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is seeking a Transit Information Systems Technician, Grade 19. This position is responsible for analyzing system functions and reports, troubleshooting issues, and performing repairs, installations, and programming of bus electronic and communication systems. The employee serves both as an internal technical consultant and a hands-on technician. In the consultant role, they contribute technical and practical expertise to the development of specifications for new or improved bus-based information and communication systems, supporting team-based processes for selecting, acquiring, installing, and operating advanced transit technologies. In the technician role, they test, install, maintain, and repair complex transit information and communication systems with integrated electromechanical components, train staff on system use, and oversee system rollouts and upgrades. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $64,942 to $102,711, based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. MCDOT's mission is to move people and connect places with seamless, equitable transportation options that are safe, environmentally responsible, and support economic growth and vibrancy in Montgomery County. The Division of Transit Services coordinates transit services in Montgomery County, operating the County's Ride On bus system.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of journey-level experience in the troubleshooting and installation of microprocessor-based electronic systems, revenue handling equipment, or communication systems.
  • An Associate of Arts Degree in electronics technology or a related field.
  • Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver’s license from the applicant's state of residence at the time of employment application.
  • Upon completion of bus driver training by Montgomery County: Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "B" (or equivalent) Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with air brakes and passenger endorsements, from the employee's state of residence.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical evaluation, including a physical examination and drug screening.
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts on weekdays and weekends.
  • Must be able to work off-site.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience interpreting and applying schematics, wiring diagrams, operating manuals, manufacturer’s maintenance instructions, and troubleshooting in Intelligent Transportation Systems.
  • Hands-on experience using electrical/electronic tools such as a multimeter, probe, soldering bench, etc.
  • Experience in independently solving technical problems concerning revenue and electronic systems and equipment.
  • Experience with corrective and preventive maintenance, daily task routines, and electronic systems.
  • Experience providing oral communication, such as presentations, briefings, and written communication, such as reports, proposals, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Perform bench and field repairs on electronic systems that include networked digital video systems, Wi-Fi equipment, CAD-AVL, and other Intelligent Transportation System subsystems.
  • Oversee the daily compilation, retrieval, and storage of SmartCard system data, including preparing database reports and assisting with data analysis.
  • Maintain preventive maintenance, repair, and spare parts inventory databases.
  • Provide technical input on hardware and software specifications, acquisitions, installations, and related facility or telecommunications needs.
  • Serve as a liaison among divisions, management, and contractors for the SmartCard system and transit technologies, including recommending system improvements.
  • Develop and support budget documentation and manage funds for supplies and parts.
  • Responsible for the county-provided maintenance vehicle.
  • Be able to operate buses upon passing the county CDL provided training class.
  • Essential employees must report to work during a general emergency or on liberal leave.
  • REQUIRED to work overtime during inclement weather situations and emergencies, which may include overnight stays.
  • Successfully complete a comprehensive six-week training program that includes classroom instruction and on-the-road practical experience in both daytime and nighttime conditions if a Class B (or equivalent) Commercial Driver's License is not already possessed.
  • The candidate must be able to work rotating shifts on weekdays and weekends.
  • The candidate must be able to work off-site.
