About The Position

This position involves all duties and responsibilities associated with transit vehicle operation. Duties include carrying out those functions pertaining to the safe and efficient operation of assigned vehicles on routine and/or special service routes and paratransit schedules. Incumbents in this position work primarily in the field, operating transit buses, regardless of weather conditions. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Position is also subject to Wyoming Association of Risk Management (WARM) guidelines.

Requirements

  • High school education or GED.
  • Computer/Tablet experience.
  • Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A, B or C with passenger endorsement (P) preferred OR ability to obtain CDL with passenger (P) endorsement within the first 3 months of hire, Evidence of Insurability.
  • Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination by obtaining a DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate for a minimum of a 1-year qualifying period and then maintain certificate thereafter.
  • Ability to safely operate a transit bus, all models, and sizes.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local traffic laws.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to division policies and procedures.
  • Ability to identify different amounts and denomination of money.
  • Ability to quickly respond to a sight, sound, or light when it appears.
  • Ability to recognize a potential problem or hazard.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and other city departments.
  • Ability to effectively, courteously, and professionally communicate both orally and in writing while interacting with customers and staff.
  • Ability to always provide exceptional customer service by attending to the needs of a diverse customer base in a sensitive manner.
  • Ability to maintain professional composure while under stress and pressure.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use technology that supports transit practices and programs, such as fareboxes and mobile data terminals.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently and to exercise reasonable judgement in decision making.
  • Ability to positively adapt to change.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.
  • Ability to work unusual hours, split shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
  • Ability to arrive on time to work assignments and maintain a history of satisfactory attendance.

Nice To Haves

  • Thorough knowledge of the City of Cheyenne street systems.
  • One year of bus driving experience preferred

  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local traffic laws and regulations.
  • Cheyenne Transit Program will ONLY train for a Class C CDL with passenger (P) endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Operate all types of buses assigned for the purpose of transporting passengers.
  • Operate wheelchair lift and assist patrons to board and alight safely.
  • Provide professional, courteous assistance to passengers, including individuals with disabilities, ensuring ADA compliance and promoting a positive public image.
  • Memorize routes, transfer points, and fare structures.
  • Adhere to time schedules and routes.
  • Keep and report accurate passengers counts.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and is in strict compliance with Federal and Wyoming traffic laws and regulations as well as DOT rules and regulations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and adherence to all transit operating policies, directives, and procedures.
  • Conduct self in an appropriate manner, working effectively in a diverse work environment, using prudent judgement always and assuring professional quality of services to all.
  • Complete assigned tasks in a safe manner and in a constant state of alertness.
  • Perform a complete and thorough pre-trip/post-trip and shift change inspection of bus and safety checks of equipment.
  • Perform minor maintenance repairs as needed (fill washer fluid, add oil).
  • Must be able to read chemical labels and follow safe handling procedures.
  • Clean (sweep, empty trash, clean headlights and taillights and interior windows) and fuel bus daily and as needed.
  • Complete accident/incident reports accurately and legibly, as necessary.
  • Report hazardous or dangerous conditions along bus route and at passenger boarding areas, such as obstructions, construction, and potential criminal activity.
  • Provide information and general assistance to passengers and the public regarding transit policies, proce­dures and processes in a professional manner.
  • Respond calmly and effectively to emergencies, accidents, or disruptive passengers, following all City and DOT procedures.
  • Operate the bus efficiently to minimize fuel use and environmental impact.
  • Maintain confidentiality of employee and passenger information.
  • Attend work when scheduled, on a regular and dependable basis.
  • Maintain a clean uniform and professional appearance consistent with City standards.
  • May be required to act in capacity of dispatcher.
  • Assist with special projects as necessary or assigned.
  • Participation in safety meetings, trainings and workshops as required.
  • Follow all City safety procedures and report all accidents/incidents immediately to supervisor.
  • Addressing unruly passengers.
  • Operating in a courteous, knowledgeable, and tactful manner with staff and the general public.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
