Intermountain Electronics (IE) is a leading provider and manufacturer of custom engineered Process, Electrical Control and Power Distribution turn-key solutions to the Data Center, Industrial, Power/Utility, Oil & Gas, Mining industries in North America. Our products range from large scale one-off custom Power Distribution, Control and Process systems to standard off-the-shelf electronic/electro-mechanical components. Reporting directly to the Transformer Department Supervisor we are currently seeking a Transformer Winder Trainee for our Nightshift to be based at our Price, UT facility. Requirements

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent plus two directly related experience in the high voltage electrical field or Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school in electrical engineering or closely related field; plus, six months to one year directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Works from winding sheets and process specifications and procedures.
  • The machine is operated from a standing position.
  • Uses an assortment of hand tools, gas torch, and overhead hoists.
  • Finished materials may weigh up to 3000 pounds.
  • Employee must have passed the Cooper Power System’s brazing test.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, write routine reports and correspondence, and understand basic math.
  • Ability to read and understand wiring schematics and layout diagrams.
  • Experience with various hand tools, crimpers, wire strippers, electrical testing equipment.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working in a team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Confident with the ability to work closely with employees, peers, and management while keeping production flowing and meeting due dates.
  • Demonstrated proficiency to achieve high quality results in transformer assemblies, wiring, and troubleshooting through continual attention to detail and anticipation of potential problems during the early planning and design review stages.
  • Leadership and communication skills.
  • Must be able to write NCR’s and comply with safety rules.
  • Must be able to establish productive and effective communication ties and relationships with co-workers, supervisors, customers, and staff.
  • Ability to analyze and understand transformer plan documents and specifications and successfully resolve practical problems as they may occur.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook word processing software and AutoCAD, Solid Edge design software.
  • Must have OSHA Forklift Certification or able to obtain such within 6 months of employment.
  • Must comply with and follow all IE standards, programs, policies, and procedures as they apply to this position.
  • Reports any unsafe condition immediately.
  • Must operate and perform job duties in a safe manner.
  • Must be able to operate/work safely around machinery/moving equipment.
  • Must be able to regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision, Distance vision, Peripheral vision, Depth perception and Ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand and walk.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit and to stand and work on concrete floor for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to work a 40-hour work week as additional time as required.

Responsibilities

  • Learn the steps and process involved in winding and assembling defect free transformer cores and coil assemblies.
  • Perform to the level of and develop the skills of a Transformer Winder over the training period.
  • Review wiring diagrams and work orders to determine type and size of wire specified, as well as the type, size, length, and circumference of primary and secondary windings of coil to be wound.
  • Select coil-forming device for specified coil and fasten device onto winding machine arbor or spindle.
  • Turn setscrews to adjust tension on wire and set counter for the number of turns specified.
  • Thread the end of wire from reel through tension device, guides, and spreader, bend wire ends to form lead, and attach lead to coil core.
  • Start machine and manually feed wire over coil core or spreader to obtain even and uniform winding and shape of coil.
  • Observe counter and stop machine at the specified number of coils.
  • Wrap paper & insulation between layers and around wound coil or insert plastic blocks between turns to form cooling ducts.
  • Wind coils according to engineer diagrams and drawings using a coil-winding machine and hand tools.
  • Cut wire to form leads, using wire or bolt cutters.
  • Pound coil with a hammer or mallet to shape end windings or remove coil from fixtures.
  • Inspect coil(s) during the winding process to ensure there are no defects and to verify conformance with winding specifications.
  • Ensure quality standards are met and sign off on project QA forms.
  • Move winding core to staging areas when complete.
  • Disassemble old transformers or damaged coils and make repairs.
  • Read and interpret winding specification documents to determine characteristics required for specific coil to be wound.
  • Determine coil number, quantity, and revision.
  • Record coil number on coil and on labor recording paperwork.
  • Determine and install the appropriate mandrel device on the machine.
  • Adjust mandrel and plates as required by window size specification.
  • Load conductor and insulating paper to de-reeling mechanisms on the machine.
  • Measure materials, make adjustments to the machine to accommodate material, and verify proper alignment.
  • Verify proper secondary coil.
  • Make adjustments to the machine (flattener, traverse, and material tensions) to yield desired finished coil dimensions as specified.
  • Operate hoist equipment.
  • Wind and insulate coil per winding instructions.
  • Wind coil sections per to the specified number of turns.
  • Determine adhesive locations per reference specifications and apply liquid adhesive with a hand applicator at specified locations throughout the coil.
  • Insert cooling ducts, special insulation, and component parts at specified locations throughout the coil.
  • Braze or bend taps and leads into the coil at specified locations throughout the coil.
  • Position and insulate leads per winding sheet and diagram(s).
  • Splice material per specifications as required.
  • Remove coil from mandrel device by hand or hoist it aside to a pallet.
  • Dip/VPI and bake transformer coils.
  • Operate coil winding machine.
  • Use overhead crane, forklift, hoists, to assist in transformer assembly and moving materials/projects.
  • Operate grinders, cutting torch, drills, and misc. hand tools.
  • Properly care for and maintain tools in good operating condition; ensure tools and equipment are properly stored at the end of each shift.
  • Maintain a clean and organized transformer winding area.
  • Use tools, PPE, and equipment in a safe manner.
  • Maintain regular and consistent job attendance and punctuality.
  • Follow and comply with IE Core Values and Cardinal Safety rules.
  • Follow and comply with IE safety program.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work area at all times.
