About The Position

Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute (Hampton Proton) is seeking a part-time Medical Transcriptionist (with 2+ years of experience) who interprets and transcribes dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding patient assessment, workup, therapeutic procedures, clinical course, diagnosis, prognosis, etc., in order to document patient care and facilitate delivery of healthcare services. This role is a specialist in medical language and ensures that all medical documentation is precise, timely, and compliant with regulatory standards.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the medicolegal implications and responsibilities related to the transcription of patient records to protect the patient and the business/institution. Meets standards of professional and ethical conduct and confidentiality. Adheres to HIPAA regulations.
  • Return dictated reports in printed or electronic form for physicians' review, signature, and corrections, and for inclusion in patients' medical records.
  • Recognizes, interprets, and evaluates inconsistencies, discrepancies, and inaccuracies in medical dictation and appropriately edits, revises and clarifies without altering the meaning of the dictation and making sure to check with doctors to obtain the correct information.
  • Transcribe medical dictation to provide a permanent record of patient care. Applies knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology to the transcription and proofreading of medical dictation from originators.
  • Reviews and edits transcribed reports for spelling, grammar, clarity, consistency, and proper medical terminology.
  • Operates designated word processing, dictation, and transcription equipment as directed to complete assignment using designated equipment effectively, skillfully, and efficiently. Maintains equipment and work area as directed. Assesses condition of equipment and furnishings, and reports need for replacement or repair.
  • Distinguishes between homonyms and recognize inconsistencies and mistakes in medical terms, referring to dictionaries, drug references, and other sources on anatomy, physiology, and medicine if directed by physicians and other healthcare practitioners.
  • Answer inquiries concerning the progress of medical cases, within the limits of confidentiality laws.
  • Uses interpersonal skills effectively to build and maintain cooperative working relationships with physicians, management and supervisory staff, medical staff and coworkers.
  • Adding and updating external physician directory.
  • Assure the efficient operation of workflow within the department by performing other duties as assigned.
