About The Position

Reporting to the Sergeant, Police Trainer, the Training Constable (Field/Police Training Officer) delivers practical, operational training to recruits and members through instruction, coaching, and performance evaluation. This position supports recruit training, and in-service training, ensuring members develop competencies, judgement, and behaviors required for safe and effective policing. The role reinforces operational standards through hands-on instruction in controlled and real-world environments and plays a key part in ensuring recruits and members are competent, operationally ready, and deployable in alignment with ASPS standards and legislative requirements.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience coaching, mentoring, or training personnel in a policing environment, including the ability to assess, evaluate, and document performance in multiple settings.
  • Experience delivering structured training or instruction within policing or public safety environments.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable legislation (Criminal Code of Canada, Police Act (Alberta), Charter) and ability to apply and enforce professional policing and training standards, including addressing underperformance.
  • Ability to maintain mandatory training and recertification requirements, including use-of-force qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver hands-on training in both operational and controlled environments.
  • Coach and mentor recruits, reinforcing operational standards and expectations.
  • Assess performance through observation, structured evaluation, and documentation (e.g., DORs).
  • Support recruitment and in-service training (classroom, practical, and scenario-based).
  • Participate in mandatory training delivery (e.g., use-of-force, firearms) as qualified.
  • Apply and reinforce ASPS standards, policies, and professional conduct.
  • Maintain accurate, defensible training records and contribute to continuous program improvement.
