About The Position

Train Crew employees provide the safe and timely movement of customers’ freight. Previous railroad experience is not required; Union Pacific provides 14 weeks of classroom and on-the-job training. Employees must attend the full training program and successfully complete all exams to continue employment. After training, employees work in road or yard service according to their territory and seniority. Road crews may travel between locations and stay away from their home terminal; yard and local crews classify rail cars and build trains, working with an engineer or by remote control. This is a seniority-based role that may require covering other locations within the assigned area. Assignments may be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and schedules include variable hours and irregular days off. Temporary furloughs may occur based on business volumes. With career progression, employees may apply for engine service and become a Class 1 Locomotive Engineer. Initial-year earnings are described as around $80,000; median annual wages for employees with five years of service are stated to exceed $100,000. Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.
