About The Position

This posting will be used to fill a current vacancy in the Traffic Services Division of the Public Works Department within the City of Oklahoma City. An eligibility list will be established or supplemented for filling future vacancies per provisions of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is under the direction of an immediate supervisor. The primary purpose of this classification is to perform skilled technical work involving the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic equipment associated with the citywide Advanced Traffic Management System. The employee must possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities prior to assuming the position. Essential job functions include: installing, maintaining, and repairing traffic signal systems, including wiring, conduits, poles, heads controllers, switches, and other vehicle detectors, lighting and electricity or electronically controlled installations or systems; testing faulty equipment using specialized computer software and instruments such as volt-ohm meters, oscilloscopes, and signal tracing equipment; diagnosing the cause of equipment malfunctions; and repairing equipment by replacing defective components, rewiring or adjusting mechanical parts, following schematics and wiring diagrams, using electrical hand tools, etc. Additional duties include: modifying and testing controllers to achieve special operating conditions; documenting equipment changes on wiring and phase diagrams; acting as an inspector on traffic signal and lighting systems under contract; and performing clerical duties such as completing daily work orders, activity reports and logs, materials used, etc. The employee may conduct equipment maintenance and repair in the shop and/or at remote locations throughout the city. This classification has regular contact with other City employees, vendors, etc., to exchange work-related information and provide technical assistance. The employee frequently works independently following general verbal and written instructions. Work products are subject to periodic review by a supervisor.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of digital and analog electronics.
  • Knowledge of computer-based programs and software utilized to install traffic control equipment and devices.
  • Knowledge of and skill in configuring, diagnosing, and repairing network configurations.
  • Skill in performing precision work.
  • Skill in locating and repairing equipment malfunctions.
  • Skill in interpreting schematic and wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of electronics to work performed.
  • Ability and willingness to work independently in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Ability and willingness to make work-related decisions and assume responsibility for the quality of work products.
  • Ability and willingness to observe standard safety practices.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to record information accurately.
  • Possession of a valid driver license (Operator).

Responsibilities
