About The Position

Under general supervision, performs skilled technical work involving the installation, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of traffic signal systems, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure, and related electrical and electronic equipment throughout the city. This position supports the safe and efficient movement of vehicle and pedestrian traffic by ensuring the reliable operation of traffic signals, street lighting, network communications, and associated systems. Work includes monitoring and maintaining systems within the Traffic Management Center (TMC), performing field inspections and preventative maintenance, responding to emergency callouts, coordinating with other technicians, contractors, engineers, and utility providers, and maintaining accurate maintenance and operational records. The position requires the ability to diagnose and resolve complex electrical, electronic, and network-related issues, utilize specialized testing and programming equipment, and work safely in traffic environments and at heights. The Traffic Signal Technician II works independently and as part of a team, exercises sound judgment in problem-solving, adheres to safety standards and procedures, and participates in a rotating on-call schedule to respond to after-hours and weekend emergencies. The role requires both fieldwork and limited office-based duties and is designated as a safety-sensitive position.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and comprehend and respond to simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, schematics, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and keep accurate records.

  • Knowledge of basic electricity.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
  • Knowledge of the city service area and distribution system.
  • Ability to test and repair traffic signal devices and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components.
  • Ability to use good judgment in evaluating problem situations.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in traffic signal operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
  • Two (2) years of bucket truck experience.
  • Valid Tennessee Driver License with class B CDL endorsement and clear driving record, or ability to obtain class B CDL within 6 months of hire.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of at least one (1) year of college in electrical or electronic engineering, computer technology coursework, or related field.
  • Possession of Level I or Level II International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Certification for Traffic Signal Controls.

Responsibilities

  • Check systems inside the TMC for correct operation and report issues needing to be addressed.
  • Coordinate projects with other traffic signal technicians.
  • Test and program ITS devices using various applications and a laptop computer.
  • Perform annual inspection and maintenance on all traffic signal equipment, hardware, cameras, and network devices at each signalized intersection.
  • Set up safe work zones and wear proper personal protective equipment.
  • Input and maintain accurate records pertaining to maintenance and emergency call outs.
  • Locate traffic signal underground utilities, including fiber optics, cables, and conduits.
  • Identify issues with, troubleshoot, and repair network components including fiber optics, CCTV cameras, network switches, and servers.
  • Maintain inventory of traffic signal hardware and ITS components, both installed and in storage, and request parts to be ordered.
  • Work with contractors, engineers, and other utilities during design and construction.
  • Repair and maintain streetlights at various locations and interstate ramps.
  • Repair, replace, re-lamp, and hang Christmas lights.
  • Hang street signs, banners, flags, and other items for special events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
