About The Position

The Traffic Signal Division operates and maintains the Burlington/Graham Computerized Signal System. The system consists of approximately 200 traffic signals and other traffic control equipment located in the cities of Burlington and Graham. The system allows real-time communications, via fiber optic cable, to each traffic signal.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of cabinet wiring, electrical components, and signal system construction materials.
  • Extensive knowledge of municipal signal operations, terminology, and related traffic control systems.
  • Proficient in electrical industry standards for signal construction.
  • In-depth knowledge of troubleshooting procedures for traffic signal control systems, maintenance, and on-site repairs.
  • Expertise in work zone safety and working with electrical systems.
  • Skilled in operating a bucket truck, hand tools, and other equipment for signal maintenance.
  • Proficient in utilizing hand/power tools, electronic maintenance tools, and traffic signal materials.
  • Ability to supervise and provide guidance to less skilled personnel.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to identify and resolve traffic signal issues.
  • Able to follow and carry out supervisory instructions efficiently.
  • Capable of maintaining effective working relationships with city employees and the public.
  • Ability to report needs and issues to supervisors in a clear and concise manner.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  • At least 1 year of work experience in traffic signal and signs installation, maintenance, signal electrical work, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and electronics experience.
  • Availability to work a rotating on call schedule (typically every five weeks).
  • Respond to emergency calls when required.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in Electrical or Mechanical fields is highly desirable for related work experience.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Journeyman Electrician.
  • ISMA Level II certifications include: Traffic Signal Field Technician, Traffic Signal Construction Technician, Traffic Signal Design/Engineering Technician.

Responsibilities

  • Performs manual and technical work maintaining traffic signals, traffic signal control equipment, traffic signs and traffic markings.
  • Ensures installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signals in compliance with NCDOT and MUTCD standards.
  • Installs new signal equipment, including overhead, pole, and ground-mounted components.
  • Troubleshoots signal control systems and performs on-site repairs.
  • Utilizes test equipment to diagnose and resolve signal issues.
  • Makes emergency and scheduled repairs to all traffic-related equipment.
  • Conducts traffic counts and performs bench repairs.
  • Prepares and maintains signal cabinets.
  • Participates in the cleaning and organization of the shop.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and parts for services.
  • Inspects work completed by private contractors.
  • Performs yearly traffic signal maintenance.
  • Installs and maintains traffic signs and markings.
