About The Position

This role involves monitoring and inspecting the installation of traffic signals, computerized traffic signal controllers, solid state components, switching equipment, vehicle detectors, emergency preemption devices, time clocks, wiring, conduits, and other traffic signal related equipment (including digital and analog), as well as street lighting systems. The inspector ensures that construction and installation adhere to plans, specifications, and LACO Traffic Signal Control Equipment Specifications, while also meeting all code requirements and utilizing safe work practices. A key aspect of the role is the ability to independently troubleshoot and evaluate maintenance and repair needs for traffic signal equipment and related devices, proposing solutions and upgrades. The position also requires the ability to read and interpret plans and specifications for traffic signal and street lighting projects, inspect and direct contractors on the proper placement of traffic controls, respond to public and official inquiries regarding traffic signal issues, prepare inspection reports, maintain accurate records, and foster effective working relationships with various stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Five-years of Journeyman experience as Highway Transportation System Electrician, installing electrical components associated with: Traffic signal systems, Street lighting systems, low and high voltage in series and or multiple grounding systems, Electrical service pedestals.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and inspects installation of traffic signals, computerized traffic signal controllers, solid state components, switching equipment, vehicle detectors, emergency preemption devices, time clocks, wiring, conduits, other traffic signal related equipment (including digital and analog), and street lighting systems to ensure that the construction installation is done per the plans and specifications and LACO Traffic Signal Control Equipment Specifications, and that all code requirements are met while using safe work practices.
  • Must have the ability to independently trouble-shoot and evaluate maintenance and repair needs of traffic signal equipment and related devices and propose solutions and upgrades.
  • Must be able to read and interpret plans and specifications for traffic signal and street lighting projects.
  • Must be able to inspect and direct Contractors on the proper placement of traffic controls.
  • Respond to complaints and inquiries from the public, elected officials, other agencies, Construction Division staff and other affected Department Divisions regarding traffic signal problems.
  • Prepare inspection reports and maintain accurate inspection records and other required documentation.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Department staff, other agencies, contractors, and the public.
