About The Position

Under general supervision, the Signal Electrician installs, maintains, repairs and rebuilds traffic signal control mechanisms and related components; inspects electrical and electronic circuits for potential electrical problems; and operates test equipment to detect equipment failures and make necessary repairs.

Requirements

  • Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED) plus secondary education and/or training in the installation, testing, inspecting, or repairs of electrical control equipment and circuitry or related fields
  • Two (2) years of experience installing, maintaining and calibrating control or measuring devices comprised of solid state electronic or computer systems used in the signal trade; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must possess a valid state of residency driver’s license.
  • Must remain insurable under the County’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Knowledge of Electrical installation, maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of Traffic controls.
  • Knowledge of Traffic signals.
  • Knowledge of Electrical principles
  • Knowledge of Data entry
  • Knowledge of Office practices and procedures
  • Skill in Typing, data entry, word processing, and computer operation.

Responsibilities

  • Installs, maintains, repairs and rebuilds traffic signal control mechanisms and related components (e.g., pre-timed and actuated).
  • Inspect electrical and electronic circuits to identify existing and potential electrical problems.
  • Operates test equipment to detect equipment failures (e.g., meters, oscilloscope, microcomputer, etc.) and makes repairs.
  • Analyzes circuits and assembles traffic controller housing wiring.
  • Designs and assembles test panels and bench mock-ups used for testing traffic controllers.
  • Conducts research, compiles and interprets data
  • Develop solutions to special problems.
  • Prepares and maintains reports (e.g., daily maintenance reports, quarterly signal inspection reports, etc.).
  • Inform employees regarding proper signal maintenance techniques.
  • Receives and responds to inquiries and complaints from general public relating to traffic signal control.
  • Assists traffic technicians.
  • Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed; attends training and seminars, as directed.
  • Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
