About The Position

Are you passionate about keeping our community safe and our streets flowing smoothly? The City of Gastonia is seeking a dedicated Traffic Services Technician to join our team. As a Traffic Services Technician, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of our city's roadways by maintaining and improving traffic control devices, signs, and signals; aiding in the prevention of accidents for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists. Performs technical, novice-level work in a variety of fabricating, repairing, and traffic maintenance assignments, such as assisting in the design, implementation, and maintenance of traffic control devices, signs, and signals to regulate vehicular and pedestrian traffic flow. As well, this position is responsible for performing routine maintenance and repair of traffic signals, ensuring they operate effectively and comply with safety standards. Traffic Service Technicians work in collaboration with other city departments, community groups, and residents to address traffic concerns, solicit feedback on initiatives that enhance safety and convenience for all road users, and respond to emergency situations such as traffic signal malfunctions to restore traffic flow. Additional duties in regard to traffic services may be required as needed. All work is conducted under moderate-to-limited supervision of the Signal System Supervisor. Traffic Services Technician I may exercise supervision over seasonal workers and Traffic Services Technician II may exercise supervision over seasonal and/or Traffic Services Technicians I.

Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent
Entry level to minimal experience in traffic operations and maintenance
Knowledge of electrical theory and/or electronics
Moderate experience in traffic operations and maintenance
Or any combination of education and experience there of
Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or couching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces.
Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.
Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.
Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips.
Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal spoken word levels with or without correction.
Repetitive Motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.

Obtain a NC Class B Commercial driver's license with Tanker endorsement within three months of hire.
Complete NIMS IS-700 training within 12 months of hire
Valid driver's license with acceptable driving history
Basic Work Zone Safety and Flagger certifications within 12 months of hire
IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level I certification upon hire
Possess or ability to obtain a NC Class B Commercial driver's license with Tanker endorsement within 12 months of hire
Drug screening, criminal background, and reference checks are required.

Responsibilities

Fabricates traffic signs, street markers and other municipal signs using reflective and non-reflective sheeting, photography and silk screening process, computerized letter cutter and hear applicator.
Installs and maintains traffic signs, street markers, and other municipal signs.
Keeps records of work performed and materials used; including records of signs and pavement markings.
Operates light automotive, mechanical keyboard equipment in connection with the above tasks.
Performs daily pre-trip inspections on assigned vehicles and equipment.
Arranges and installs pavement markings on streets and in parking lots.
Operates, cleans and maintains painting equipment.
Prepares and mixes traffic paint for street and parking lot applications.
Installs and maintains automatic traffic counting equipment.
Assists in maintaining and installing traffic signal equipment.
Assists other divisions in proper signing of construction work zone sites.
Installs and maintains detour signs and barricades for construction projects and special events.
Fabricates traffic signs, street markers and other municipal signs using reflective and non-reflective sheeting, computerized software and letter cutter.
Installs and maintains automatic traffic counting equipment.
Assists in maintaining and installing traffic signal equipment.
Installs, relocates and maintains traffic control devices including controllers, control boxes, conduits, cable ducts, and signal heads.
Installs and repairs traffic signals.
Wires new and old traffic signals.
Runs cable to controls and signals.
Performs line work in the installation of signals and controls.
Splices cable.
Sets up, tests and assists in the repairs and overhaul of controllers, detectors, and other electrical and electronic control equipment in a shop, including solid state equipment, radar, sonic, magnetic loop, and proximitor amplifiers.
Hooks up and checks out all new traffic control devices before placing them in operation.
Answers trouble calls for field repairs.
Subject to call after regular working hours on emergency repair of traffic control equipment.
Installs electrical conduit.
Installs fiber optic cable and signal cables.
Installs traffic control signs and maintains traffic markings.
Installs overhead signs and cables.
Wires controller cabinets to assure proper sequence of indications.
Installs and maintains school flashers and time clocks.
