About The Position

This position is accountable for supporting the Traffic Operations Engineer in accomplishing the field functions of the Bureau of operations, Traffic Operations Section which includes development and implementation of programs for the installation, operation, and maintenance of traffic control devices. The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Traffic Operations Field Technician. Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job relate technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience; OR Seven years of engineering experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Extensive districtwide travel.
  • Ability to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks per year.
  • Ability to work extensive periods of overtime.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of civil engineering and the application of engineering techniques to design and maintenance of traffic signs and markings.
  • Ability to coordinate with a staff engaged in either field or office engineering functions and perform job duties independently, with minimal guidance or supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that signing and pavement marking is in compliance with the adopted National and Illinois Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Conducts an annual inspection of all traffic control devices in the district.
  • Writes work orders for the maintenance and update of existing and new traffic control devices.
  • Maintains the District Traffic Sign Inventory System, inventory of other traffic control devices and report development from the various databases.
  • Reviews signing and striping in contract plans and during construction activities.
  • Serves as liaison with citizens, outside agencies, and other bureaus within the department.
  • Submits plans for various Traffic Operations contracts and may act as the inspector and/or resident on these projects.
  • Oversees districtwide programs, such as the Tourist Oriented Directional Signs (TODS) program, and signing on the Adopt A Highway program.
  • Supervises the execution of special projects, including road closures, detours and other emergencies.
  • Establishes and maintains records for the district “No Passing Zones”.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
